CHICAGO GRAIN
My Associated Press.
CHICAGO, April 22.—The market for
wheat, though Irregular, was decidedly
strong the first half hour owing to an
urge demand for the May option. , Small
receipts In the northwest and the firmness
of European markets were the factors on
which the demand was chiefly based. Lib
eral sales of the July and September deliv
ery was late news regarding the new crop
in the southwest tended to offset the .it, i
of the congestion In May. The market
closed Irregular, May being firm and July
anil September barely steady. May opened
a shads to % i :-, c higher at 35'.iC to 954 c,
advanced to 96 7 c and cl led at 96 '-r, July
.-..lei between 87% c and 884 c and closed at
87 %c.
Corn was weak almost all day because of
heavy selling of the July ami September de
liveries by leading commission houses. The
bull leaders made little pretense of sup
porting the market. May opened He to 4c
lower at e;i, , c to C64c, sold at 674 c ami
then declined to 60v,c and closed,at e;i;a,i,

Oats .re firm early In the session, owing
to the bulge In heat, but the late weak
ness of corn had a depressing inline.ncr.
May opened Cc higher at r,:;:;e „,,,1 clos'd

Provisions were rather weak at the start
but the market rallied bet.!- in the day as
a result of buying by shorts and closed,
steady, July pork closed a shade lower and
lard and ribs were, unchanged to 24c lower.

SAN FRANCISCO QUOTATIONS
(Exclusive service to the Los Angeles Herald
by L. A. Cruder & Co., members Los Angeles-
Nevada Mining Stock exchange, 305 San Fer
nando building, Los Angeles).
SAN FRANCISCO, April 2:.— mining
market continued on the toboggan today.
There was a good supply of selling orders from
the east and very little local support. Great
lien.l led the decline, selling down to 43c. This
ii a drop of 35 points since Monday's close.
Goldfleld Consolidated, Florence, Palsy and
Fraction were all hammered by the bear coterie
lut recovered slightly towards the close of
the afternoon session. Daisy and Fraction
were the most active issues during the call,
ing traded in to the amount of 64'J0 and Mem
shares, respectively.
Kumars were rife on the street that another
dividend is to be declared on the Florence,
but up to this writing your correspondent has
been unable to obtain any authentic confirma
tion.
Trading In the Bullfrogs and Tonopahs was
about normal, the balance of the outside issues
receiving very little attention.

RAINS ARE RECEIVED fts

Strawberry Crop May Receive a Set.
back, but Vegetables and Grains
Are Benefited—Local Mar.
ket Is Active
The rains which fell over Southern Cali
fornia yesterday were' received by the pro
duce men as the herald of plenty, and gen
eral rejoicing prevailed oh the exchange
and In the market. -•-■-». f.'
Vegetables and bunch stuff had been es
pecially affected by the dry spell. The tur
nip crop was In bad shape, acre after acre
having gone to seed before the vegetable
had reached maturity.
Barley, corn, oats and wheat were great-
Iv In need of rain and the crops were
threatened with disaster. Reports from
every part of the state are that the rain
was timely and that ample crops are now
assured However, more rain would not be
amlaa and ranchers are hoping that they
will be further blessed.
The demand for produce was good yester
day and the market was well supplied.
Trading on the exchange was active.
Eggs were weak but It is expected that a
firm tone will prevail as a result* of tho
rains.
Butter was firm but the effect of the rains
upon pasturage will doubtless cause larger
receipts and consequently a weakness In the
market.
The strawberry crop is liable to receive a
temporary setback on account of the rains,
with a corresponding falling off In receipts.
t),a market was v.'Cl! supplied yesterday
and the demand was good.
The fruit market was rather dull. Fish
wore scarce and the demand was light.

PANIC HAS PURIFIED
BUSINESS ATMOSPHERE
Clews Says Banks and Trust Com.
panics Are Free from Unsound,
Dishonest Management and -
Speculation
Henry Clews, banker. New York, In an ad
dress delivered at the annual banquet of the
National Association of Cotton Manufactur
ers in Boston on April 16, said: 'irieiaH
"Now that the storm of the crisis has passed
away, and the Investigation and prosecutions
that have taken place have laid bare the cor
porate evils that were rife among us, including
railway rate rebating and various forms of
looting and wholesale graft by controlling capi
talists, we have come into a purer business
atmosphere. Corrupt, plundering and law
breaking officers of banks and railway. Insur
ance and other large corporations have, in
many cases, been exposed and shown the error
of their ways, and we have in consequence a
higher business morality than we hail before
we' passed through this ordeal of purification.
In other words, the house cleaning we have
had has done us good, and this of Itself is a
compensation that can hardly be overrated in
its future influence.
"Banks and trust companies and railways,
Insurance and Other corporations have been
freed from much unsound and dishonest man
age Hie and also, loose, grafting and specu
lative practices, and we have In their place
that higher mora] tone which Is safeguarded
by greater publicity of accounts and more rigid
official eliminations under the now and stricter
laws than ever before.
"Thus temptation to chicanery and bther cor
porate wrongs and abuses by those iii control
of corporations Is largely reduced and this Is
important, for an m.i proverb tells us that
opportunity makes the thief."
