NEW YORK STOCK
AND BOND MARKET
NEW YORK, Nov. 6.—The stock mail. to
day gave plain signs of feeling the effect of
the speculative pace which wee set for it
yesterday and became unsettled and hesitat
ing In the course of the day's business. The
total business fell away considerably from
the lap-go aggregate of yesterday. Stocks were
fed out freely to meet this demand from the
outside, All bids were filled promptly accord
ing to the definition of brokers on th© floor.
.-■ Afterward there was p. disposition to push the
sales at concessions. The impression thus
made of the market having arrived at a stage
§ that discounts the favorable tore was em
phasized by Its action in response to the an
nouncement of the progress for disbursement
of $11.28 extra proflts on each share of, old
Northern Pacific stock, the new stock on which
- the final 12% per cent of subscriptions is pay
able In January not charing in the "melon
cutting.*"
Northern Pacific Itself had sold as high as
150V4 after the opening, but fell to 148% before
the dividend announcement and did not rally
to above 119V4 afterwards. -
Tha company is at some pains to declare in
• the official statement of the dividend dis
bursement tli^t "no part has been derived
from the business."
The derlvlatlon of these profits' Influence
Is somewhat obscure. J^te Northwestern Im
provement company, the stock of which is
owned by the Northern Pacific, owns coal and
timber lands in Montana and Washington. Its
.2,775,000 stock ln the Northern Pacific treas
ury is valued at .2,775,000 In the annual re
port of the company.
The amount to be withdrawn from the re
sources of this company to provide for the
$11.25 per share dividend $155,000,000 of North
ern Pacific stock is 117,453,000, which amounts
to 62. per cent of the stock of the company.
Possibly the weakening of the stock after
the news became known owed something to an
apprehension of a sharpening of legislative
pursuit of the company by this evidence of its
opulent condition. The depression of foreign
stock markets on account of the renewed
political complications reflected some influence
on _ this market. Money rates were slightly
firmer both on call and on time. The sagging
tendency of railroad stocks was 'restrained
by the show of strength among the Industrials,
•specially the metal group. Bonds were firm.
Total sales, par value, 818,000. Government
bonds were unchanged on call.

CHICAGO GRAIN
(Special service to The Herald by J. C. Wil
son, member Chicago Board of Trade, Hotel
Alexandria, Los Angeles).
CHICAGO, Nov. s.—Wheat opened lower and
was heavy during the greater part of the day,
Increased activity coming in only during the
last half hour of the session, brought about
by the claims of heavy workings for export
In the way of Canadian wheat. Liverpool was
easy early, following an official estimate that
the Argentine wheat crop damage would ag
gregate 24,000,000 bushels. Inasmuch as it has
been generally conceded thai the Increase In
acreage is anywhere from 6 to 12 per cent this
would bring the crop up to normal figures.
CAbles from Buenos Ayres says: "Frost caused
little damage to wheat on account of previous
tains and the injury is estimated as limited
to 6 per cent. No alarm about the crop need
be felt. ' The yield of wheat is. estimated at
204,500,000 bushels. The crops are thriving
and the customary drawbacks do not seem to
bo more than usual. A general rain is fall
ing." »
Corn was weak all day with very few inter
vale of firmness, due to short covering. A
local influential house was against the market
air day long. When the market reached about
the bottom prices an estimate was published
by Statistician Snow claiming a final yield
on corn of 2,610,000 bushels, which is 63,000,000
bushels In excess of his former estimate, with
quality better than last year.
Oats were a little steadier than corn, but
the one was weak with usual lack of specula
tive interest in the market.
Provisions were lower all around. Poor sup
port was the chief factor in the decline. _.

WHOLESALE AND RETAIL
BUTTER DEALERS TO MEET
Adjustment of Short Weight Sought,
but Settlement of Question Not
Probable in the Near .
"'•y Future
An executive meeting of members of the
produce exchange was held yesterday morn
ing for the purpose of discussing short
weight butter. The meeting was brief,
members deciding that the fight concerned
the retailers alone. |
The meeting sprung from a request of
the retail dealers to consult with the pro
duce exchange. The butter committee of
the produce exchange has arranged to meet
a committee of retail dealers this week to
discuss short weight butter and If possi
ble bring about an adjustment.
Tlv. dairy men are fostering the move
ment. | They seek to have full pound weight
represented ln every roll sold instead of the
regular roll, or cube, which falls short of a
pound. ■ .
The wholesalers declare that it Is not
their affair by reason that they buy and
sell on strictly full weight basis, pound for
pound. -, ■'
Butter Is usually bought In 120-pound lots
and then cut ' Into cubes by the retailers.
In cutting into cubes, it Is eald, the retailer
short weighs, a fraction of an ounce. to
more than an . ounce being ■ the shortage
calculated. — '
From the trend of yesterday's meeting It
Is obvious that the meeting to follow with
the retafl men will fall of its purpose to
reach an adjustment. .
The retailers claim -hat they do not sell
butter by the pound but by the cube and
that therefore they do not have to . give
full pound weight. . ■ - >
The grevious point at Issue arises out of
this practioe, for, as the consumer has
learned, when a pound of butter is re
quested of his dealer ha is given in return
a cube, short weighed In many instances
as much as two ounces. Some of the but
ter sold is marked "full weight." and, In
all probability It Is In most cases. .' But
the consumer does not, as ,a general prac
tice, . Insist upon full weight and through
his ignorance of the butter traffic Is robbed
In consequence
