Clifford Breece, in "The
Thief" (Eastern* Co.)
ALGERNON CHARLES SWINBURNE'S latest work'is "The Age of; Shakespeare," a volume which
has created considerable discussion in London literacy and dramatic circles. Mr. Swinburne, be it
known, is very much averse to being interviewed, but that fact did not deter a London newspaper
from sending a man to see him, I nable to get hold of the poet at his home,' the journalist waited on Wim
bledon common at a spot
where he knew Mr, Swin
burne would pass on bis
daily walk. Presently the
poet made his appearance,
and the exultant scribe ap
proached him in his most
persuasive manner. For a
moment Mr. Swinburne was
too dismayed to answer, and
feeling that at his age flight
was impossible, lie was non
plused how to act. Sud
denly an idea occurred to
him, and he said: "My
friend, I see by your lips
that you are talking, but as
I ani stone deaf, I cannot
hear what yon say. I will,
therefore, wish you good
morning.'
lat yon are talking, entire
am stone deaf, I cannot
iar what you say. I will,
erefore, wish you good
ornincv
The little ruse was entire
ly successful, and with a
disappointed look the crest
fallen interviewer departed,
mayhap to think out an
other article..
