Sudden jump In Western Union Follows Rumor of Absorp tion of American (By Associated Press) NEW YORK, July 30.-The dealings at the stock exchange by noon today had overtaken the figure for yesterday's total dealings, and the total rose to more than 1.000.000 shares. Union Pacific, United states Steel, Southern Pacific and Atchison all sold during the day at the highest prices in their history. Today's active market was attributed in Its broadly underlying Impulses to loss of con fidence in the report on the tariff Mil. The movement was helped along by many specula tive devices. One device that proved most ef fective was the circulation of rumors of the accumulation of this or that stock by some financial magnate. A sudden Jump in Western Union was ac companied by a report that an early absorp tion of that company by the American Tele phone and Telegraph company was ln con templation. An astonishing number of rumors bearing on particular properties were set afloat and gave rise to Isolated price movements in succession. This was responsible largely for the professional appearance of the market. j More gold was engaged for export to Argen tina. The stock market's closing tone was strong after digesting the realizing sales of the final hour. Bonds were firm. Total sales, par value, 84,616,000. United States bonds were unchanged on call. Hut ton & Co., members Chicago board of trade. 112 West Third street, Los Angelea CHICAGO, July -The wheat market was depressed In the past week by the rush of new grain, receipts of winter wheat being the i largest In years, with a total of 7,000,000 bush els, the sensational advance of July in the flrst half of the month causing a heavy selling by farmers an.l. In turn, by dealers. The movement in the week brought the July re ceipts up to tbe normal. Extreme nervousness marked the last three days on reports of rust In the spring crop. These reports were seal tered and, with but one exception, revealed very little damage. However, the trade recog nised the possibilities of danger, for the de structive rust epidemic of 1004 did not appear until the last days of July, when harvesting was almost ready In South Dakota, and the yield was cut down .60.000,000 bushels In the grain states during August. Conditions are now similar to 1904 in a heavy growth and unusual moisture. Brokers have not heard the last of the rust, and an excited market wl'' prevail until all danger Is passed. South Dakota will bo In harvest next week, and harvesting will be gen eral In two weeks. The extent of the spring crop cannoj be determined as long as rust Is threatened^ Fall In the price has checked the movement /rom the farmers, and the receipts will not be materially enlarged until the first movement of the spring crop. Growers are reluctant to accept orders under 31, and they will be less disposed If damage to the spring crop develops. Receipts, while large, have been well absorbed by the milling trade. South ern mills are seeking grain In the northern markets, as their local crops have been ab sorbed. Europe has been purchasing on a small scale as prices have been dropping, and there will be no Improve, In these pur chases as long as prices continue tee show a lower trend. The heavy creep In Russia will supply Europe with a larger volume than dur ing the last two years, and. being the cheaper grain. It la reasonable to expect Importers to keep out of our markets until necessity forces purchases. The wheal market is In a sculping position, and should be sold on all showings of strength and only bought when crop damage reports appear. Market Ranges WHEAT— Open, High. Low. Close.
