FINANCIAL-COMMERCIAL RATE ON CALL MONEY EASIER STRINGENCY RELAXES AND PRICES RALLY LIQUIDATION OF LEADERS AIDS SPECULATION % Banks Increase Resources and Ex. change Demand for Funds Is Lessened—Payment of Loans Forced [Associated Press] WBW YORK, Jan. 4.-The stringency In the cull money rate relaxed today and prices of stocks rallied thus re versing the process of yesterday Cor responding changes occurred in the Bto'-k market sentiment regarding the special messages. The easing of the money market was due in- part directly to the liquidation in the stock market, which was for pi by the culling of loans. The banks thus Increased their resources and the stock market lessened its demands for money. . The fall in prices yesterday also cai - ried with it a growth in the short In terest in the market. There was enough Know of support to take away the ap pearance of abandonment of the specu lation by its recent powerful supporters, an appearance which was of great m lluence in discouraging the speculative *entiment yesterday. The process of liquidation was pushed to further lengths early today and the level of prices at one time was 1 to » points lower than yesterday's close quite generally. The call loan market opened at 9 per cent, and the urgency of the demand contributed to the sell ing- pressure in stocks. The character of the buying and bid ding up In Southern Paolfir served as assurance also that influential support was being extended. Strength Infectious The strength of this stock ultimately spread its effect by sympathy through the rest of the market. Reports of the conference between the president and the executive heads of several great railroad systems con firmed the uneasiness caused by yes terday's reports and had much to do with the morning declines in prices of stocks. Then came a statement from Presi dent W. C. Brown of the New York Central, one of the conferees, profess ing to feel .no apprehension about the proposed bill either in its probable ef fects on the railroads or Investors. It was even asserted that the precedent of previous legislation Justified a hope that increased income for railroads might result. Later came the report from Washing ton that the president's message on the interstate commerce law amendments would be delivered next Monday. From this it was concluded the railroad pres idents' arguments had been taken into renewed consideration with a prospect of working changes in the executive lecommendatlons to congress. A factor In quieting anxiety about anti-rorporate measures was the news of the merger of trust companies ef fected under the auspices of 3. P. Mor gan & Co. The accomplishment wttß felt to demand the inability in that direction that deprived .the outlook of cause for anxiety froirftho standpoint of vested capital. The rally put prices higher than yesterday's closing. JBondi were irregular. Total sales, par value, $5,271,000; United States 4s, coupon, declined \i per cent on call. CHICAGO GRAiN Special service to The Herald by J. C. Wil son, member Chicago board of trade, New York Stock exchange, and San Francisco Bond and Stock exchange, 212 West Fifth street, Los Angeles. CHICAGO, Jan. Wonderful strength was shown In the wheat market today. Speculative support or much loops and power developed and It easily absorbed some very substantial offerings. Trade was somewhat excited over the news from Argentine und the resulting strength In Europe, and this more than offset the effect of a poorer demand for cash wheat here at lowered premiums today. Thoer was considerable scalping telling for a reaction In prices, but it almost Invariably counted against th > seller. Cash wheat In other markets was Him, and indications of a much better export business In Manitoba wheat came to the Bur f-ce Liverpool cabled that Argentine sur plus for export will be about 80,000,01)0 bushels, against 06,000,000 bushels last year, that threshings are deficient, quality poor, and that tin- United Kingdom will need to buy all of tlia Canadian surplus. No. 1 northern was quoted today at 1 to 3c over May In Itor«, as against 3 to 3Vic over yesterday. But last bids were only le over. Domestic statistics eon- nod bearish. The close tonight gave no In dication of any abatement in the buying fever as yet. and surface signs are for some further advance until the shorts get covered and longs g"t overbought The corn market, like wheat, displayed re markable powers of resistance but did not make as great relative gain.
