FINANCIAL-COMMERCIAL PRICES DROPPING IN WALL STREET SEVERE DECLINES MADE ON LIGHT SALES COLLAPSE IN WABASH SECURI. TIES CAUSES DISAPOINImENT Call Loan Market Still Reluctant tg Yield to Usual Factors of Re laxation After New Year's [Associated Press] NEW YORK, Jan. Ll.—The drooping tun,, of the stock market persisted to day. Some of the severest declines were effected on comparatively light yules. in the 'WaiiasU-i'itisiiiirg and Wheel- Ing and Lake Erie group the collapse in prices demonstrated a feeling o1 keen disappointment with the reported I'iins of reorganization and combina tion of tlio two properties by exchange of present securities for new, coupled with (.ash assessments, it was said much of the important selling today and for several days past was trace able to sources identical with the buy- Ing orders responsible for the 3H4 point Jump in Rock Island on the Mon day after the Christmas holidays. The evidence of retirement from the market of large commitments in this connection is of additional sentimental important ><" the tone by reason of the large share attributed to the samo interests in .the general market for some time past. The New York call loan market still is reluctant to yield to the effects of the usual factors of relaxation after the turn of the year. Deferred re quirements of syndicates in underwrit ing securities or in financing the needs of corporations are given as explana tion for the unseasonable behavior or Hi" money market. The Introduction In congress nt the bill Intended to pmbody Prwideni Taft'a recommendations fur changes In the Interstate commerce laws gave ma terial for cogitation on the part of the security holders. The reports of a con fi rence at Washington between gov ernmi nl officials and ofßclals of the Union Pnrific and Southern Pacific gave rise to conjecture of a possible compromise of the government's suit against these companies under the anti-trust law and were the cause of some resistance by those stocks to the prevailing depressions. Bonds were irregular. Total sales, par. value, ¥3,458,000. United States bonds were unchanged on call. NEW YORK STOCKS Special service to The Herald by J. C. Wil son, member Chicago board of trade, New York Stock exchange, and San Francisco Bond and Stock exchange, 'IVi West Fifth street, Los Angeles. CHICAGO, Jan. 11.-The market today wae another scalping affair of only moderate vol l|me, General tone inclined to easiness fol lowing the early cable advices and the fairly Influential local Belling. About all of the strength came, from cum. Pressure waa not heavy enough to bring about a material dt- clinir. The tone was nervous much of the time, ('ash demand counted for much of the morning, but sales finally made a fair foot ing. Southwestern cash markets reported very weak, northwestern showing strength. St Louis reported off grades of red wheat off 2 to 4c. The buying that prevented further break was al must entirely against the downward indem nities. The corn market was hammered a trifle at the outset, but recovered this loss and added some little gain later. The advance carried prices within the faintest fraction of the highest prices on the crop to date. Early sell ing was overdone. Longs refused to unload, but instead bought more on weak spots and offerings proved scanty after the market start ed up. Forecast is for milder weather, with possible precipitation west. Seaboard reported exporters canceling sales made abroad, as they can sell the corn higher at home. Oats—The market followed corn in a gen eral way— early, strong later. Cash prices steady to -, t i; higher. Leading elevator concerns sold May and shippers sold July early, while commission houses bought on the soft spots. Provisions—Trade limited. Hog run here and west very large, all points larger than a year ago and pricey at the yards were 10 c lower. There was occasional selling of May product in a mild way by packers. Wil son. 212 West Fifth street, Los Angeles. NEW YORK, Jan. 11.—Cables this morning failed to meet the break of yesterday ami after a momentary hesitation at the opening the market Improved slowly on a reduced volume of bu.slne.srf until approximately twenty points of yesterday's decline had been recovered. Around liii for -May the market hung fairly steady, advances over that llgure being checked by sporadic bursts of outside specula tion. Spot markets reported as steady though rather more unsettled by this decline than the preceding ono. It is understood that one large long accouni, approximating TS.OOO bales, was sold yesterday, and while the undertone is becoming steadier there is a feeling of ner vousness over the possibility of further liqui dation. Prices should naturally recover some what further, holding steady slightly above present prices until some fresh development appears.
