NEW HIGHWAY ASSUMES SHAPE ROAD TO SANTA BARBARA IS NOW ASSURED Stretch of Country Popular with Auto. ists Will Be Widened and Repaired Within Month SANTA MONICA, Jan. 26.—Another step in the construction of the pro posed automobile coaat boulevard from Los Angeles to Santa Barbara was taken when the county board of eupervisors adopted a resolution declar ing the road between Santa Monica and the boundary of the Malibu ranch a county road. Supervisor C. J. Nel ]is informed a Santa Monica man in terested In the boulevard project that work on the widening and improve ment of the road would begin in thir, ty days. Chairman Nellis declared it is the intention of the supervisors to have the work done as soon as possible. The stretch of road In question, ap proximately fifteen miles in length, is one of the most scenic drives in the state. It has been used for many years by the public, but it runs al most entirely through private land, owned by s. number of local and Los Angeles people, among these being- Joseph H. Call. The Los Angeles-Pa cific Railroad company has a strip of land paralleling the wagon road, upon which it was planned some time ago to extend its tracks. The road to the Malibu ranch is be coming more popular every day with automobilists. Every Sunday, in fair weather, sees at least fifty or sixty automobiles winding their way over the hills and along the beach of the scenic drive. At present the road is practically a narrow trail. In pdaces it is impossible for two vehicles to pass. It is the declared purpose of the supervisors, according to Chair man Nellis, to widen the roadway and repair the bridges, so when completed the highway will be among the finest in the country. In this connection, a theory advanced by Santa Monicans regarding the at tempt of the Malibu Railroad com pany to extend its line into this city and later to Los Angeles, Is consid ered tenable. The substance of this is that, after the wagon road is de clared a county highway the Malibu Railroad company can apply for a franchise along the county right of way for the extension of its line. The fact of the Los Angeles-Pacific own ing the strip of land along the beach for ten miles has prevented the exten sion of the Malibu line up to this time. It is known the Malibu officials have long been planning an extension and their agents have already procured an option on lands belonging to the Jones estate, south of the long wharf, to North Beach park. FRANKLIN COMPANY USES DIAMONDS IN FACTORY Stones of Inferior Quality Come in Handy to True Up Emery Wheels That diamonds are used In the mak ing of automobiles is a fact known to but few of those familiar with the finished machines. Nevereheless several hundred dollars' worth of diamonds are included in the material period ically secured by the purchasing de partment of the H. H. Franklin Manu facturing company for the making; of the Franklin air-cooled motor cars. In its factory the Franklin company de stroys several diamonds a month using them for the truing of emery wheels. The stones are large, but they are of an inferior quality and are known as bort diamonds. A large number which the Franklin company recently ordered were imported from Asia. They have a faint sparkle, although they are uncut. A radiating crystallization destroys the value of these diamonds as orna ments because they will not take a polish, but it fits them particularly for cutting and grinding work, as they will not crumble. They are harder than emery and will cut it, but are slowly ■worn away in the process of truing the wheels. These diamonds can be used until they are so small as to be almost invisible. Carrigan was out on nothing but a friendly trip, yet had he been demon strating to a party of millionaires — possible customers for a dozen big cars —he could not have handled the machine better nor could have every part of its mechanism responded with more unanimity and smoothness of ac tion. No attempt to break records was made, for Carrigan is one of the most considerate pilots in this part of the world. But despite this fact a return trip from Glendora to the court house was negotiated in one hour and twelve minutes, and to those enjoying the ride it did not seem as though the machine was going faster than twelve or fifteen miles an hour at any stage of the game, so smooth was the riding. The Royal Tour'st can justly lay claim to being one of the handsomest and most perfect cars of the season. Not only in its magnificent power and graceful lines does the machine prove its superiority, but for actual comfort it makes a devotee of the most con firmed antl-auto crank just as soon as he gets a chance to ride a mile or two In its roomy tonneau. Mountain & Carrigan are doing a great business with the Royal Tourist, as only a demonstration is needed to convince most prospective buyers that it is Just the car they want, whether power, comfort or durability is the prime requisite. Since the Royal Tourist combines all three to a very marked extent Mountain & Carrigan are to bo congratulated on being the factory agents for this district. DECORATORS PREPARE FOR BIG MOTOR SHOW Grand Avenue Rink Will Be Trans. formed Into Fairy Bower in Time for Exhibit The decorators who are to transform the Grand avenue rink into an automo bile fairyland will get busy at once. The work of taking out the old deco rations and putting in the new will begin this week and when everything is ready for the exhibits of 1910 motor cars for the opening, February 7, the auditorium will present a much changed appearance. The walls are to be draped in flags and Manager Hem pel decided yesterday to decorate the balcony. The use of pillars to form a colon nade is a new idea in the west. The decorative scheme used in the Phila delphia show last week was almost Identical with that to be employed in Los Angeles, excepting where wooden signs were used, glass signs with gold lettering will be employed here. The posters announcing the show made their appearance yesterday and caused much favorable comment. They show a motor girl at the wheel, the whole effect standing out from a pur ple background. The show committee has decided upon an extensive advertising cam paign and Assistant Manager Henry will make a trip throughout, the south ern end of the state this week to spread the show doctrine and make up parties from the different cities. San Diego will also send a large dele gation overland if the weather is suit able for touring. There will also be an Orange County day and a Santa! Barbara and Ventura day. The rules which will govern the show have been printed and were distributed to the fifty exhibitors yesterday. Those rules provide just how the signs must be hung, what size they can be and how the different exhibits are to be in stalled. One rule provides that no ex hibitor can decorate his booth. All the decorations will be put up under the supervision of Manager Hempel and the committee. When the space contracts for the 1910 automobile show of Couthern Cal ifornia were checked up yesterday at a meeting of the show committee it was found that only 150 square feet of accessory space, remained unsold. This will be disposed of today, as there are a number of applications.. The space for motor cars has been entire ly exhausted and several firms are 6n the waiting list to take any space which is canceled. The total number of exhibitors amount to fifty-one, of which thirty eight are automobile firms. These rep resent forty-eight different makes of cars. There will be over 100 models on display. Manager Watson of the Fiat agency received the pleasant news yesterday that he would have the special gun boat body Fiat here for the show. This is along the lines of the torpedo bodies, which created such a sensa tion at the New York shows. The Fiat company was one of the first to make these special types. In addition to the gunboat model there will be the 45 --horse power shaft drive touring car and a special roadster. This will be one of the attractive exhibits of the show. Another new car never before seen on the coast will be the Croxten-Kee ton. This is made in several models. The French type will be shown here by the Tri State company. L. H. Johnson received word yester day that his shipment of Nationals for the show would be here within the next week. This will be one of the most complete of the big car exhibits. It will consist of the National Forty touring car and toy tbnneau, a road ster of the same type, a chassis of the six "ninety" and a Speedway Forty. The Fal-Car will be another of the new cars which will make its debut at this show. This will be shown in several models. Manager Hempel has secured 10,000 small buttons for the purpose of ad vertising the show. These are pur pip with a reproduction of the poster girl. These buttons will make their first appearance today and hundreds will be sent all over Southern Cali fornia to advertise the show. PLUGS EASY TO CLEAN A clever mechanic, who does a lot of testing and who is usually brimful of tips states that a good euro for dirty sparking plugs is to run the engine for some little time with the compression taps wide open. This has the virtue of cleansing the points, however foul they may be—that is, of course, provided they are not too dirty to spark at all. It Is not quite clear why there should be any special scavenging, or burning oft action, under the circumstances noted- but, anyway, it is ensy enough to try, and the experiment is not a costly one.
