12 FINANCIAL-COMMERCIAL PRICES REDUCED BY LIQUIDATION DEMAND FOR STOCKS IN NEW YORK PROSTRATED BELIEVE SECURITIES PASS INTO WEAKER HANDS Capitalistic Groups Carry Campaign Over Into New Year and Are ■t Forced to Sell to Meet Re. quirements Jor Money [Associated Press] NEW YORK, Feb. 7.—Extreme pros tration of demand was the conspicuous ■ feature of the stock market today. The heavy liquidation in consequence made severe Inroads on prices. The extent of the selling: last week and of the resulting declines, followed by the week-end rally, had inclined speculative sentiment to look for a steadier market. The renewed out pouring of stocks and the determined abstention of effective support, threw speculative sentiment back into depths of depression. Buying on a scale down Is to be re lied on always except in -periods of downright panic, but ordeirs of this class today were encountered only at steady concessions in prices, and any attempt to bid up prices In face of the flood was not to be detected. That every sale was matched by a purchase, goes without saying, and that such purchases have represented a passing of stocks from stronger to weaker hands for some time Is the conviction of a considerable body of opinion in the stock market. As' to the sources of the liquidation, there exists a fairly defined division of opinion. On one side is the view that the great capitalist groups, Which ac , cumulated constantly last year, missed an opportunity to sell out at the high prices by carrying their campaign over into the new year, being overcome meantime by the requirements of the money market and the conviction that the political outlook threatened the welfare of the corporations. Another view is that distribution of last v.car's accumulations was actually effected while prices were held up by manipulation, following which the fall in prices is seen with complacency by the powerful capitalist groups, if not actually fostered by professed alarm and by recall, of credits through the control held brer the great banking in stitutions. Foreign securities and money mar kets were undisturbed. The private discount rate declined in Paris and also in London, despite withdrawals of gold from the latter center for shipment to Europe and to South America. The local money market was easy, but the rapid fall in prices of stocks induced some recall of credits, where margins were not repaired. The day's extreme declines ran between 4 and 6 points for the stocks in which the bulk - of the trading occurred. Bonds were irregular. Total sales, par value. $2,801,000. U. S. -'s advanced >_ and the 4's coupon declined Vi per cent on call. NEW YORK STOCKS Special service to The Herald by J. C. CHICAGO, Feb. 7.—Wheat started out weak and was at one time * cent below Saturday'a close, but later made a very substantial ad vance. At the top tho gain was l*c over Saturday's close and I*o over this morning's low. An unexpected decrease In the visible supply where an Increase was expected was probably as potent as anything else in ad vancing values. The decrease was largely at Buffalo, where the afloat stocks have been heavily drawn upon. Southwestern buying of wheat was In evidence to a moderate extent and quite a number of crop complaints were forwarded. Some soles also reported of wheat to Mexico, not important, on account of the reduction there in Import duty to take effect February 15. Cash wheat firm, southwest and northwest. The May wheat had become mod erately oversold again and needed only some thing like to decrease at Buffalo to run ln the shorts. The corn market was lower than Satur day's close throughout today and responded only feebly i.'.-.'l briefly to the big gain In Wheat Scattered longs got out of May and some went over to July and many receivers sold May outright Cash corn was In poor demand and sold off *c to lc. Trade In corn today was of big volume, but in small and miscellaneous lots chiefly and without large Individual trading. , Oats ranged lower with corn, the May future easier relatively than the July. Long oats came from widely scattered sources and the load w-aa considered. As in corn, much of the long May sold out was replaced by July. Further good buying today by one of the packers, who also bought last week, and there also was some miscellaneous Investment de mand. Belling was almost exclusively by longs who took rr ,ir.s. Precedent for such a step is given by pointing to his enrollment about a year ago in the ancient Roman Academy of the Arcadl. „ The clerical and lay members of the Knights of Columbus would be joyous should the pope become a knight. It is believed he will announce his position at a special audience he will give to a pilgrim band composed of knights and their families next summer. The pil grimage will be led by the Incorporators of tho society— M. Geary. Daniel Colwell and Dr. M. C. O'Connor —and by the Rev. P. J. McGlnney, brother of its founder. After the audience with Pope Pius the knights will have the privilege of view ing the Vatican's beautiful gardens and art gallery. In the Sistine chapel they will see the works of masters that adorn its walls. In St. Peter's special services will he held for the pilgrims from America. Mgr. Kennedy, rector of the Ameri can college.ln Rome, will bid the pil grims welcome there, and they will greet the American students in their summer retreat just outside the city. At the audience with Pope Plus the knights will present to him a sub stantial puree and an Illuminated ad dress conveying tho greetings of the society. The travelers will have a whole sec tion of seats at the Passion Play in Oberammergau. In Genoa the pilgrims will ii" entertained by the" faculty 0/ i the Colleglo Brlgnoll Sal.
