12 FINANCIAL-COMMERCIAL READING ALONE STIRS EXCHANGE COAL ROAD ONLY ACTIVE FEA TURE ON WALL STREET RUMOR STARTED AGAIN ABOUT "CONCEALED ASSETS" One Feature Is Strong Recovery in Rates of Foreign Exchange in Spite of London Decline tAesodatea Press] KHW YORK, Feb. 16.—Subtract the dealings In Readme from today's stock market and only a. meager aggregate would remain. Even United States tSecl the unvarying leader of tho market for many months, was completely overshadowrd. No news developed to explain the Heading movement beyond the revival of the -Rending mystery." as It Is known to the professional element In the operations In stocks. This "mystery" has to do with the Fuppoeed concealed assets of tho Heading com pany. The point made In the present movement Is that the company will be obliged to make a report under the terms of the corporation In come tax law. which will disclose Its "con cealed assets." The second preferred stock was marked up today to conform to tho supposed exchange Into common and first preferred stock. This privilege provided when the first preferred privilege made that stock more valuable than either the second preferred or common stock, and when the chances of the common stock fnr sharing in dividend payments wern prob lematical, so that the exchange of half of the second preferred Into common stock mlgiit present a financial advantage to the company. The purpose of such an exchange now, with the common stock receiving larger dividends than other stock, is not clear. The tone was weak In the morning and the recovery, with the extension of the rise In Reading, was dragging and dull. Fpeclal stocks of minor importance made sharp ad vances, but the market was not strong until the last half hour. A feature was a strong recovery In rates of foreign exchange In BPite of a decline In the private dtscount rate In London. Preparation for the coming pay ments of New York city bonds held in I/jnJon Is a factor In exchange^ There figured In the day's discussion the heavy Increase In the European visible supply of copper shown by the fortnightly publication of statistics today. The copper Industrials moved sluggishly, but tl-.e report throws light en the failure of the favorable American coppar statistics published last wek to help the copper stocks. The price of tho metal declined here and In London today. Bonds were irregular. Total sales at pnx value amounted to 1J.567.000. United States 2s coupon and the 4s coupon advanced % per cent on call.
