12 FINANCIAL-COMMERCIAL MARKET IS THIN; DEALS ARE SLOW SLIGHT STIR IS STARTED IN RAILROAD STOCKS PHILADELPHIA STRIKE NEWS IS < QUIETING Report of Comptroller of Currency of National Banks Shows Loan Expansion Well Distributed [Associated Press] NEW YORK, Feb. 24.— Dealings in stocks today were scarcely larger than yesterday. The thinness of the market .■was as marked on the selling side as on the buying side, and It required but a. small absorption to lift prices. Today's movement lacked authorita tive explanation. A supposition nat urally arose that some financial project Was working, out designed to change the relation between properties, already very close by reason of the control of Louisville & Nashville held by Atlantic Coast line, and a mutual control of other properties held by Louisville & Nashville & Southern railway. Until the movement in these stocks stimu lated some vitality in the rest of the market it was practically lifeless. An early attempt to depress prices met ■with little success, and this as much as any definite news of conditions prompted the latter upward movement. The quieting down of affairs in Phila delphia was accepted as good news. The abstract of the reports to the comptroller of the currency of the national banks of the country as of January 31 shows the loan expansion since the November 16 report well dis tributed, the New York banks being responsible for less than $18,000,000 of the $80,715,880 aggregate increase for that period. The stock market liquida tion effected in that interval explains this relative showing. In the yearly comparison, however, there is shown an increase since February 5 last of $388,736,887 in the loan account of the national banks, the cash reserves hay- Ing shrunk in the same time over $2i, --000,000. The credit condition is. in con sequence, still considerably extended. In spite of the substantial deflation which has occurred in the stock market. Bonds were steady. Dealers report an improved demand for bonds. Total sales, par value, $2,692,000. U. S. 2's, 3's coupon and 4's advanced •Si per cent on call. 1> ~~ ' NEW YORK STOCKS Special service to The Herald by .T. C. #Ml -«on, "1' West Fifth street. L (~~ CHICAGO GRAIN Special service to The Herald by 3. C. Wll soh, member Chicago board of trade, Nfw York stock exchange ami San Francisco bond and stock exchange, BU West Fifth street, Los Angeles. CHICAGO, Feb. 21.— There Wai an unusually small and tame wheat market today. The range of prices coveted was about % to %c, a little more down than up from yesterday's close for May, and a little more up than down from yesterday's close on the more deferred options. Senders of crop damage report! do not despair, despite tho fact that such reports were given rather scant courtesy today. The trade Wai again concerned wtfh the poor de mand for cash wheat and flour, and evidences of clow movement toward consumers. Cash wheat here was practically neglected, but the premiums for red winter are fading away without bringing In any new demand. The market was subject to much pressure from the northwest and from local sources in the early part of the day, but the local selling was overdone, and it was covering by this class which made the. highest prices of the day later. The Northwestern Miller reported that one railroad has over 1,000,000 barrels of flour on Its tack between Minneapolis and Chicago, so geat is the congestion. The rallies seem to be lather feeble and lack new blood. " Corn made a much better showing today than yesterday. An early dip disclosed the existence of largo number! Of resting buying orders from out-of-town sources. Tho market rallied well, smaller earlier sellers covering later. There were claims .today of export business at the seaboard, but none of the ordinary shipping sources know anything of it. * Oats ranged up a little with' other grains, but trade was light. Yesterday's selling was overdone and the shorts covered more or less. Provisions were firmer early, later t.i-y. Tade was slow and uninteresting throughout, but fairly good evidence that leading lonns have I'" n seilinK up to the market's capacity for ready absorption. Market Ranges WHEAT— Open. High. Low.
