SHOW ADVANCES GENERAL TREND OF STOCKS IS UPWARD INFLUENCE OF BIG STRIKE CON FUSES MARKET Clearing House Banks Indicate a De. crease of Ten Millions, When ;"• an Increase Estimated at Three Million Expected (Associated Press] NEW YORK, March Concerted operations for an advance on a large scale were clearly perceptible In the stock market today. Unfavorable in fluences were entirely Ignored in New York, although the market for Amer icans in London was slightly affected before trading began here. Liirgt and asftrossivo aocumulation and rapidly rising prices in United States Bteel and Union Pacific had a sentimental 'ff(irt on tIMI wJlo'e list- Tho movement In steel suggested the resumption of market operations by the brilliant campaign In that stock last year. Southern Pacific was favorably af fect.,] by the character of the day's testimony In the hearing of the gov ernment's suit asainst the merger. The recital of Union Pacific history by one Of Its bankers was rend With profound Interest in Wall street. The influence of the Philadelphia Strike was minimized by the quiet conditions reported from that city, al though conflicting claims left the ac tual situation somewhat confused. No question wsj mised of a probable de cision In the American Tobacco cnee at Washington, in contrast with tho ruin on preceding: Mondays when the probability of a decision was as re mote. ' Although the stock market paid no attention to the bank statement, that exhibit was the subject of Interested comment in other quarters. No very clear light was thrown on the unex plained decrease of more than $10,000, --000 in cash held by the clearing house banks, where an Increase estimated up to $3,000,000 was looked for. The call loans market was not af fected. The advance in foreign ex change halted, notwithstanding con tinued hardening of long discounts and large sales here of stocks for Lon don account. Rumore were current that permission Will be accorded to the railroads to advance freight rates to gether with an advance in wages of employes. Bonds were irregular. Total sales (par value), $3,852,000. United States Its dropped /A per cent on call. NEW YORK STOCKS Special senrlea to The Herald by J. C. I"" CHICAGO GRAIN Special service to The Herald by J. C. Wil ■on, member Chicago board of trade. New York stock exchange and San Francisco bond and atock exchange, 213 West Fifth street, Los Angeles. CHICAGO, March Weakness In cash wheat, better crop reports, very large receipts and weakness In foreign markets have all counted against values today. Increasing weakness precipitated much short selling- and liquidation of long wheat. Northwest reported a poor call for flour both at big commercial nn'l at country mills. Considerable selling of May wheat was dona here today. This af fected the new crop months. Considerable consigned wheat was offered to this and the Ht. Louis market today, a fair lino arriving here. Kansas City cash demand appears to have given out. Northwest markets were rel atively tinner than on Saturday. Crop reports were better on the average than on Saturday, nevertheless they were mixed, some bad re ports coming from Kansas. There was quite a good leal Of evening up today In way of profit taking by shorts. There was continued liquidation, short sell- Ing and hedging went on In corn all day, and prices declined materially. Chief support rome from shorts and from owners of downward Indemnities. There was a little European sell ing today of futures. Weather fine and mild In corn belt; unfavorable for low grade corn, nevertheless the low grades held better than Others today. Stop orders broke corn to Its low point and profit taking by shorts steadied It up. Liquidation and short selling weakened oat» as well as other grains. I'rlnclpal support came from other shorts who secured their profit'!. Provisions opened sharply higher because of the advance of 15 cents In top prices of hogs at yards and lighter run at Westers centers. Market Ranges WHEAT— Open, High. I*'"-. Close.
