LOUIS AND SAN FRANCISCO RESORTS TO NOTE ISSUE Steel and Southern Pacific Are Main Supporting Factors in Gen. erally Weak Stock Market '-,»,.- ■- ■■:, [Associated Press] ' NEW YORK, March 11.— certain amount of speculative disquiet was restricted in the stock target today and the vigorous supporting measures from time to time were not sufficient to overcome the effects. Weakness became acute in the final hour. . The amount of important financing which remains to be done, the harden ing effect already produced on the money market and the doubtful ab sorptive power of the investment de mand for bond issues, combine to form a situation which is not viewed with entire satisfaction by the financial The announcement that the St. Louis & San 1 Francisco had resorted to an issue of notes, secured by the deposit of a proposed bond issue, is a de velopment taken to indicate a growing 'oversupply ■in the money market. An outlet for the ov«r«upply is found in the considerable blocks of the hew securities which arc placed with foreign subscribers and which have served to keep down rates in the for eign exchange market and to avert an outgo of gold. The effect upon the money market of the increased de mand for credits is seen in the higher rates for time loans and in the decided demand for mercantile paper. . The money outlook probably accounts for the recurrent depression in the stock market, although various other motives were advanced. At first It was fear of the labor Situation at Philadelphia and the un favorable copper statistics which were published yesterday. Reports of crop damage came into view later, although the grain market indicates that definite conclusions in the amount of damage to wheat remains to be formed. ; The rumor of J. P. Morgan's death, originating in London, was circulated concurrently with its authoritative de nial. Belated selling of stocks from outside sources was attributed, never theless, to these rumors. The principal support of the market centered in United States Steel. South ern Pacific was the main point of strength in the railroad list. This did not prevent acute weaknes in Union Pacific. Amalgamated Copper suffered from the bad condition in metal trade. Bonds were steady; total .sales, par value, $2,100,000. V. 8. bonds 2's regis tered advanced 1-8 per cent on call.
