CHICAGO GRAIN Special eervlce to Tho Herald by J. C. Wll eoa, member Chicago board of trade. New York stock cxchar.ue and San F'ranclaco bond and stock exchange. 312 West Fifth street. Los Angeles. CHICAGO, March IS.—Nervous, choppy and altogether unreliable and erratic market with in narrow limits today. Much crop damage news, but few orders to back them up. Local support has been by far beet all day. Some Increasingly bearish, but short sellers covered on bulges numberless times and are afraid to ■tand out for much punishment. Illinois and Indiana have been added to Kansas as con taining districts where winter killing has worked more, or less loin. 8u reports from both states, however, has been Interspersed with very good reports. The Modern Miller In a measure confirms the claims of crop' damage. In many sections, principally the Mi - sissippi valley states and Kansas and Ne braska. Trade continues to note the poor de mand for cash wheat, the continued large shipments to primary markets and poor (lour trade Three largo mills at Kansas City re ported shut down last night, and others run ning on half time, as warehouses are full of flour which is unsalable. Wholesale commission houses have been un loading corn heavily and steadily all day. Much of the selling has been for May. but all months suffered some. Shorts have been ex cellent buyers, but have found it not nt all difficult to supply their wants. Cash demand has been very poor. The weather is much milder, and this Is expected to make some trouble for handlers east and west. As In corn, there has been much liquidation of oats by longs, much selling In a hedging way by cash concerns. Treasure on the mar ket has been considerable. Shorts and two of the local elevator concerns have been best buyers. Provisions have been nervous, choppy, with rather small market and altogether unsatis factory. Trade pretty much nt sea. Consid erable covering by shorts and unloading by longs. Market had limited capacity for ab sorbing offers or supplying demand. Hog re ceipts were sensationally short; less than half those of corresponding day last year, but new buyers of product were few and not disposed to follow bulge*. Larger longs were best sell ers on opening bulge. Market Ranges WHEAT— Open. - High. Low. Slightly Improved conditions are noted In the footwear market, although no particular ac tivity exists, the disturbing element between buyer and seller still being the Question of .prices.
