News of the Mines and Oil Fields AGENCIES WILL FORM OIL STORAGE ADJUNCT New Company Is to Take Care of Surplus from Indepen dent Producers BAKBRBFIBLt), April B.—When the Kern county and Coalinga agencies are merged and become one organiza tion, which ait will tako place next week, immediate steps will be taken by the new organization to form a storage ("ompany for the purpose of takJng Bare of all surplus oil that may como upon the hands of the organized independents. The plan and detail of this storage adjunct have been thoroughly thought out and digested by the hands of the agencies, consequently its forming will be in the nature of a ratification of ■what has already taken place. In fact, the matter has gone so far on tile way of consummation that steel for i million and a. quarter barrels of stor age lias already been ordered. The plan of the storage company and Its manner of financing will be along the lines of tha Producers Trans portatlon company. Kach producer or member of the agency will be given a chance to take stock and thereby share In tho profits of the enterprise. Charges a barrel for storage, sufficient to guarantee a legitimate profit on the Investment, will bo made, as in the trail portatlon company. In addition, fuinir win be provided to advance on oil in storage in case the producer finds need of money. It la the plan of the storage company to maintain storage capacity In all tha fields sufficient to meet emergen cies, particularly such emergencies as the »rusher or— but th« bulk of tho storape capacity will be erected at or near Tidewater, near tho termi nal of the Producers' pipe line. By maintaining a large quantity of oil In storage, the agency will be able to land and take care of largo con tract! guaranteeing delivery, and by advancing funds to Its members on the oil In storage it will bo enabled to maintain tha storage nacaaaaiy. An effort was made by a committee ap pointed by both agencies to arrange for loans from a syndicate of banks on oil In storage, but them was so much rod tape Intorposed by tho money lenders that tha new plan was formed. This Is but one of the many steps which tho Independents have lately taken to strengthen their position, and the consummation of the plans now being worked out will make them im pregnable to assault. Th« organiza tion stands today at tho head of the marketing concerns of crude oil. LOS ANGELES HERALD: SATURDAY MORNING, APRIL 9, 1910. 100 DERRICKS RISE ON WITHDRAWN LAND Locators in Frantic Effort to Save Claims Rush Ma terial to Domain CAKERSFIELD, April 7.— Not fewer than 100 new wells started drilling- and fully 1000 new derricks erected on pub lic land since the withdrawal order of the secretary of the interior last Sep tember Is the estimate <<( W. H. Hill of Barlow & Kill, map makers, and the figures are declared to be conservative by J. U. Zumwalt and others who are familiar with the development in wild cat territory on the Midway and Me- Klttrick front. The discrepancy between th.- number of derricks built and the number of drills actually at work is explained In , part by th'! fact that in a large part of the new territory it is practically Im- | possible so far to get water and other • necessities for drilling, and it Is due in part tn the extreme haste with which i all the work has been done. Locators In their frantic efforts to save their claims from Jumping first put men in possession, then they built cabins, and then derricks. With men on the ground and a derrick up, thy have felt com paratively safe from Jumpers, and are taking 1 a little breathing spell— some coses enforced by lack of money and in other effsso by impossibility to get ma terials. The work of erecting derricks Is going' on as frantically as ever, anil one must make almost dally trips through the fields to keep track of the development work. "1 used to be able to tell about where ! I nils in the field by looking at the derricks," said Mr. Hill, "but 1 can't do It now. They are going up too last to keep track of." Mr. Hill says that rig timbers and materials for derricks are being rushed i to the Devil's Den old fields, as well as to SlcKittriek and Midway. . If there , is any possible oil land in any of the fields that has been overlooked It must have been hard indeed to find, and lo cators generally have the Idea firmly fixe 1 In their minds that locations must \ be followed up with actual development work. Consequently, unless there Is positive action by congress that finally settles j the question of oil land disposal, all the land located probably will be developed to the extent necessary to obtain pat ent upon It. I'robably this land will aggregate twelve townships in the Devil's Den and fourteen townships in the Mldway-Sunset-McKlttrick district, with 144 quarter sections in each town ship and a well on every quarter sec- [ tion, a total of upward of 2000 wells which must be drilled to prove this ter ritory and obtain patents. MASCOT MINE WORKS NONE BUT AMERICANS DOrrJI.AS, Aril., April R.—The Dos CabesaS mining region, north of Doug las, is experiencing » boom peculiarly American. Manager Ely of the Masi ■>' Copper company has put on »ixt\ miners at the company's bis plant, and he has SO far adhered to his policy not to hire s dingle Mexican for work either above or below ground. The result la a boom at the canif. and In the vicinity of Wlllcox. Look ing across the valley from the DrMooni a long line of black specks can be seen winding from the he»d of the valley toward the chlrieahua mountains These are the teams hauling out ma chinery and household goods to the camp. The men are establishing their families at the old sold village In the mountains The best machinery that can he purchased i" being put In at the mine and already many hundreds of thousands of tons of copper ore has be 10 blocked out. The Mascot company will begin to erect a small smelter at the base of the mountain early In the fall. At present no shipments are made, as the camp^ls not directly connected either with 'the Southern Pacific system at Pearce or the El Paso & Southwestern at Courtland. New famtltal n.re coming in over the Southern Pacific to take up govern ment land near Wtlleox and Court land. The three stores at Willeox, v a result, are recpivinj* an average of three carloads of goods every day, PACIFIC STATES BRINGS IN WELL AT COALINGA COALINQA, April I.— The Pacific States Oil company, 6, 21-15, Is pulling the 8-Inch casing In well No. 1 to per forate. The well was brought, in on Thursday and will be tested out as soon as the perforation* are made and the casing put in the hole again, The Wartthan Oil company, which is drilling on a ISO-acre piece In the Wurtthan canyon, is now 340 feet in 12-inch cat Ins, Tne bit has not yet struck a water sand, but has penetrat ed a shell formation and is now in a sandy clay. The directors and those who have watched the progress and geology of the territory closely are certain that a large quantity of oil will b« struck at a depth of less than 1000 feet. The drillers are making progress and expect to reach the depth mentioned in about six weeks--. C. N. Root, a well known driller in the, Coalings field, is the superintendent of the property. SMOOT'S BILL IS FAULTY A dispatch from Washington says the Smoot bill would allow the secretary of the interior to set aside to one per - son or company 1280 acres of oil land ; for exploration, but upon discovery ! only the present mining claim can be patented. The bill has other fe-itures which are considered faulty from the standpoint of western ideas, but it is expected that amendments will be se cured. Crown Oil company's Ventura well No. 1 was 850 feet deep Saturday. As depth Is gained the gas pressure in creases. Within the next few days It is expected the first oil sands will be en countered at a depth of about 1000 feet. The company Intends to sink the well into the third oil sands, which are re lieved to be about 1500 feet below the surface. All of the lumber for the com pany's Midway property haH been de livered and an order placed with the OH Well Supply company of L,o.s An geles for a complete standard shilling equipment, which is to be delivered within fifteen days. Rig builders now employed by the Midway Five Oil com pany will build the crown derrick and bunk house.
