WtmmWmL-.- .r ■ ;; LOS ANGELES HERALD SUNDAY MAGAZINE FILTERED WATER; MADE ICE rW\ HR «rt!flc!a! filtration of drinking I water is sometimes a very lmport -l ant problem. • When the supply to a city Is manifestly impure all the wa ter supplied may be purified by nltra-: tion. In Europe this Ms a vary com mon practice and a number of oltles- ins our own country are adoutlng this means for purifying the water. If tHei process is properly carried out 95 per cent of the bacteria may be removed.. The plan of these filters Is very sim ple. A large area is covered by stones, coarse and fine gvavel, with a layer of 1 fine sand on top. The sand must be. renewed from time to time, depending upon the state of the water. Tna wa- ter slowly passes through these- layer* and may then be collected in rtsservoK's.: This process is known as slow tana' filtration. A process that is more'rapid' than the above depends upon the addi tion oT chemicals to the water, which causes a precipitate to fall and the precipitate that goes to the bottom car ries with ft the bacteria and Impuri ties of the water. The chemical used in this process is usually alum. The carbonates that are found in all water unite with the alum and cause a heavy white cloud to fall and with It go the germs and foreign material. This method of purifying water may be seen on a small scale In the use of tablets, which are supplied for the purpose of pur'.fylng small amounts of water In the home. The use of the various fil ters to be attached to the taps gives a sense of security that is not Justi fied. Every apparatus of this kind Is more or less defective so far as the bacteria are concerned. They should not be relied upon. Of all methods for obtaining pure drinking water distilla tion and boiling are the safest and the most certain. Whenever typhoid Is prevalent the water should be boiled. It should always be remembered that It is Just as essential to use pure wa ter for the purpose of washing lettuce, celery and uncooked fruits an it Is to have pure water for drinking. The presence of bacteria in Ice has been demonstrated many times. The typhoid bacillus has been found to be alive after several months In Ice. Ar tificial Ice, manufactured from pure water, is much safer when used in foods or drinks. If the source of a natural ice Is questionable foods to be cooled should be placed In vessels and the ice placed around. HOW TO KEEP WELL Under the title given at the head of this paragraph the board of health and school board of Cincinnati have pub lished cards which they have ordered posted in all of the school buildings of that city. Directions are given regard ing air, food, exercise, rest, clothing and cleanliness, and while all of them might be appropriately brought to the attention of house dwellers, the pre cepts regarding air are of particular importance. These follow: "Fresh air and sunshine are neces sary to good health. "Cold or damp fresh air does not harm if the skin is kept warm. "Night air is as good as day air; breathe only through your nose. "Avoid hot, dusty, crowded, dark or damp rooms. "Let in fresh air and sunshine. "Form the habit of sitting, standing and walking erect; and of breathing deeply." If there have been gastronomic ex cesses committed at Christmas or any other ./east time, a few doses makes one quite as good as new. Grandma lias qttite a long list of "patients." One declares there is nothing that equals' the effect of her bitters when the appetite falls, and soup and salad taste akin to chips. Another says It Is the one medicine that cures hives quickly. It Is considered the greatest enemy of a torpid liver. One of her grown-up granddaughters testifles th-it after trying many physlclnrs for the cure of that dreadful affliction peculiar to Job, an eight-weeks' course from the magic bottle cured her, and there has not been a boll since. She says there Is no need of a doctor while grandma keeps her bottle filled. The prescription has been In grandma's family very many years. It Is quite simple and easily made. Take one tablespoonful each of the bark of sassa fras, sarsaparllla and eascara. Add one tablespoonful of senna leaves. Pour over one riuart of cold watpr. simmer slowly until reduce! one-half, strain, bottle and keep In a coo' place. For an adult the dose Is a tablespoon fill morning and night. Note: Orand ma tells us confidentially that the hit tie Is the secret of her fine complex lon. REST IN PNEUMONIA No greater . mistake Is made than constnatly to disturb a child suffering with pneumonia. .. To give medicine every hour night and day, and keep \ the child awake, Is to retard convales-, cence. While food may be necessary to stimulate subnormal vitality It shouH be given with due regard to an In fant's requirements/and If the heart's action Is good It is poor Judgment to awaken a nick child to *lye food or medicine. —Dr. Louis Fischer, Medical Record. « » » NO FILTH, NO FLIEB Henry Hilt chose as the subject for his lecture to children at the London Institution "The Story of the Fl'es." He said that In this country "lone there wore from 3000 to 4000 kinds of flies and about 40,000 aperies In the world. It had been proved conclusive ly thnt files were conveyors of cholera, tvpbold fever, and other diseases. TT > would never enter a ho'ise unless dirt "•ns there. LUCK OF PEACOCK'S FEATHERS The ppacock's feathers superstition Is nothing? Ike so i ommon as It used to be. Perhaps Whistler's celebrated peacock room helped to break It down. At any rate, neaeock's feathers are or dinary enouirh articles of decoration tn many hnrpv and placid homes.
