News of the Mines and Oil Fields COLD STONE SURFACE PLEASES MINING MEN Newcomers Start Development Work on Claims 35 Miles North of Barstow VALUES CONTINUE AT DEPTH Old Operators in District Extract Ore Assaying $551 from Fifty-Foot Activity COntlnUM in tho new inin ins camp of Hold Stone, thirty-five miles north <>f Baratow, ami all re -I"nis that the country ban one of tho 1-icinv i : orfaee ahowlngi in the louth wait arc continued by returning pros pectors, The now people, that recently made strikes In :11 < • Qold Btone country, are beginning to develop their claims, believing that depth will reveal valuea equal to the lurface. Tlmt depth nan valuea has long .since been demonitrated by Thomas B. Blackburn and associates of Oxnard, who are down "Oo feet on one of the OM Betsle clabna, adjoining thi ( lalmi of Henry Hart, where the first recent ntriko was made. The <>I<l Bet lli claims wan first developed about Janunry, 1909, by Mr. Blackburn, an engineer who has operated extensively In Utah and Colorado. A Hhaft was sunk and drifting done on the fifty foot, the 100 and the 200-foot levels. Tho amount of drifting already accom plished amounts to ISOO feet. The ihaft was started on a quartz outcropping, which is traceable for 1000 feet. The first assay made on tho sur face showed $3394 a ton, chiefly in gold. Other assays made on the sur face ihowi " values running from $32 to 1563 a ton. At the fifty-foot level as says showed $551 ana $413 a ton. From the fifty-foot to the 200-foot the shaft continues in tho quartz, which, on ac count of eroaiou, boars no high values. (ilt-\MTB AND I.IMK.VIONK The shaft follows the hanging wall of granite and footwall of limestone lisht down and it is the belief of the owners of this property tlmt with ad ditional depth the high values will again be encountered. Mr. Blackburn, who-was in I.os An geles yesterday, said he was sure a big mmc would be developed in the Hold Btone district and that If he did not };. i it somebody else would; that with the wonderful surface showing the di.; trlct i-ouldnt help but develop at least oae l>tg mine. Interested with Mr. Blackburn in exploiting the Old Bel sic property aro i3en S. Virden, M. V. Carr and Dr. H. M. Stair, all of Ox nfird. Fn>m the La Pluma claims, owned by the same partnership, a shipment of live tom Wai made last year. The shipment wai taken from a pocket on the surface and amounted to $5. r.O grofls. This shipment carried highest in lead and silver. A few days ngo a shipment of twenty sacks was made by one of tho newcomers in the district from the Karber claims. Tho shipment ■was made to Ixis Angeles, but as yet no returns have been announced. It will make no contract! for either crude of production. The lack of sufficient transportation l.s the oauM. The pres ent single pipe line of the Standard is now running to full capacity, with the company's own production and ex isting i ontracts. Until recently, how ever, tho Standard was in the mar ket for both grades of oil. product of 21.S gravity or lighter bringing: fi3 cents, while tho heavier oil was con tracted for a.t 60 cent*. The capacity of the pipe line is bo tweon 19,000 and 20,000 barrels dally and on Stanaard Motion HO, 32-24, the live producing wells are producing sufficient oil to supply about 75 per cent of the pipe line capacity. Sunday last tho new No. 4 well flowed 11,000 barrels, which Is an increase of its performance of previous days. The famous No. 2 is doing nbont 3000 liarels and No. 3 about 300 barrels. With the two small er wells, No. 5 and No. 6, which to gether are doing about 100 barrels a day, the production from this section alone will be sufficient to provide tho greater part of the pipe lino runs, if it continues at its present rate. Work is progressing on the construc tion of the second pipe line, which will double the present facilities. The new line will be sixty or ninety days In building. LOS ANGELES-KERN WILL INCREASE PRODUCTION The Los Angeles-Kern Oil company is making arrangements to increase its production. COLORED MEN DEVELOP MINE AT SEARCHLIGHT Company of Los Angeles Preach ers, Backed by Negro Capital, Make Good in Game THE PROPERTY IS A PRODUCER Camp Has Modern Machinery Working, and Reduction Plant Will Be Installed Searchlight boai ti of a producing mine that is owned and opi rated, man aged and financed by Lob Angelei col ored men. Stranger, too, is the fact that the majority of stockholders are men of standing In business affairs and ministers of tlie gospel living In 01 near I,ns Angeles. This, it is said, simply Illustrates the advancement made by the colored race when started in a legitimate bu lm proposition backed by their own capi tal. That they did not lack In courage Is evidenced by tho tact that they took up an abandoned property that had been characterised as worthless and opened a veritable store house of precious metal. Twenty-odd years ago Jimmy Orr, an old prospector, tnad' a sensational strike in Eldorado canyon. The news of his find spread rapidly and miners came from far and near to see the pa> streak that was uncovered, Orr took out a .small fortune from the surface, working with the primitive methods then in use, Lack «,f transportation Cai Illtiei and distant supply points fol lowed by attacks of hostile Indian:, drove all the miners from the district. Mining men examined the property time after time only to report ad versely. No one ■• < ' to have any faith In its value. In fai t it was passed up a.s worthless many ti. A year ago Oscar Sims, a colored Los Angeles plasterer, secured a bond on the property, and assisted by a coterie of wealthy colored men started de velopment work. The old workings Wen cleaned out, new timbers placet] iii the shaft to prevent caving, and the old rotted ladderways removed. Sink ing was initialed and pay ore eneoun ti red. Tho Searchlight Bulletin is authority for the statement that the management is now sacking bonanza ore running as high as $300 a ton and making regular shipments to the mills. The Eldorado Cold Ktar Mining com pany is now equipping its property with substantial buildings, hoisting ma chinery and mine equipment to facili tate exploitation at depth, blocking out ore reserves enough to warrant the in- Inslallatlon ot a reduction plant. Every cent used so far by this com pany has been subscribed by colored people) principally In Southern Cali fornia. The chief owners in the company are Ray, 11. C, Cooper, Rev. <:. w. Harts, Key B B.
