MINING OUTLOOK IS GOOD IN OLD MEXICO SECTION The mining Industry of Mexico, wye the Mining Ago of. New York, while its general conditions arc improving with the revival of prosp3rity, which is noticeable throughout that country, possesses many possibilities thai can not be overlooked. There are many extensive regions where little or no prospecting has been done, in the northern mining terri tory, comprising the states of Durango and Chihauhua. and wost to the coast many of the districts are rugged and inaccessible and far from transporta tion. where properties are being operated by mining concerns In restricted areas a vast section is controlled by people who keep out tlie small operator and prospector. Later these grant* will bo opened up generally. -4> ■ , Within a period of the next ten' years, if the present substantial form, o£ government prevails In Mexio>>, ad ditional security will bo furnished both operators and prospectors, ami it Id qulto likely that that country will be come one of the •largest mineral pro ducing sections" In the world. Mexico's comparative proximity to the United States gives it an advant age over many other mineral contain ing countries, as American activity has, contributed more to make Mexico's, mines what they are today lhan any other commercial factor. This link, with the administration of President Diaz has made mining In Mexico a totally different proposition than what it was twenty years ago, when life ■■ml limb wero not secure, as tmnin;r I difficult enough by Itself without having to look forward to .amtush in any narrow pass or broken-up coun try. DRILLERS ARE LOOKING FOR GREAT RUSH OF OIL Big Gusher May Come in on Sun set Company Property Any Day Adviffis from Bakertfleld aro to the effort tliftt our (if Ihn most signi.iffint of recent developments was the dis covery of tho Pacific Bunset oil com pany of a dpcp''r aand than had pre VioUlly been known in tho upper pHit of the Sunset field on the nouth half of tho poutheust quarter of section 84, 12-24. Previous wella in tills Vicinity were 500 to 600 feel deep, Below that point 11 1• - early drillers found water ;m<l did not venture further. The Pa eiflc Bunset has g"in' through the water ■and and found the deeper oil at lOxo feet. The second sand w.is explored to a depth <>r M 0 feet, when the gal pressure became so itrong that work cm the well was stopped in order to prepare for the reception of the oil In .i gusher is developed. The im mediate result of the strike has been to cause the Hanford-Sanger Oil com pany to start deeper drilling on Its ~< acre tract In the northeast quarter ol section 3, 11-24, and on the soutl quarter of the same section. Othei companies will drill <<n the west half <>f section ", and on other lands which lie above the dutcropplngs of the Bnrt oil sand and which accordingly had been counted M barren. A milo or two farther back in the bills are some trai is of another outcrop, and it Is now believed that this maybe the upturned edge of the deep sand struck by the i\n ifle Suns, t The Pacific Bunset well IS about a mile and -three-(|uarters southwest from the LaKeview, and on section 3.1, which lies between the t'ninn Oil company, has ffone into what is supposed lo be the same strata under lying all three properties, and probably the whole of the Sunset Held. The LaJtev4ew struck the pusher sand at 2285 feet, or almost exactly 1000 feet deeper than the sand found by the Pacific Sunset. This would indicate a rather steep, but by no means improb- Hble dip to the northwest. The depth at which (he Union Is reported to have found the sand agrees with this theory that the stratum i« continuous. BRITISH SYNDICATE BUYS KEITH AND MACK HOLDINGS Several Millions Is the Purchase Price of Kern River Properties BAKERSFIELD, April John M. Keith, J. J. Mack, the Thirty-Three Oil company and the Imperial Oil company have sold 1400 acres of land In the Kern river oil Held for a price unknown, but Bald to bo several mil lions of dollars The deal was closed a short time ago in England by Mr. Mack, and Mr. Keith Mid he did not know the exact amount received for the la.ml or the Identity of the pur chasers. The new syndicate, which is the Kern River California Oil Fields, Lim it. (I, securijs possession from April 1. although it is understood that the deal was concluded later than that. W. 8. Hoggs, who has superttended the property for the Thirty-Three and Imperial, will continue in the same capacity for the English company. Mr, Mack will be one of the new company's advisers for a time at least. "For my part, I shall retire from the Kern river field," said Mr. Keith. "The Imperial still has property in the Coaling* field, ami will continue to operate it. We have only sold our holdings in Kern river." The land sold includes section 33. 28-28, belonging- to the Imperial and Thirty-Three, and 860 acres in 19, 28-27, and 480 acres in section 25, 28-27, le longing to Mr. Mack and Mr. Keith in dividually. First intimation that foreign cap italists were about to invest heavily in Kern county oil lands was that a group of capitalists wire reported on the ground to spend $10,000,000 or near ly that amount in oil. , That the Rothschilds are in the pres ent deal is not confirmed by Mr. Keith, who does not know Just who the buy ers are. The English syndicate takes over th,- Imperial and Thirty-Three's con tracts with the Associated for all their production until a certain total amount of oil has been delivered. The contract 13 for 40 cents per barrel, and It will take about two years at the present rate of production to complete it. Section 33 is possibly 'two-thirds drilled up. On the other land Included In trie sale there are, no wells. Section 25 Is on the western edge of the proved territory, and section 19 is on the northwest front. The field is being extended in both directions, but the exact value of those tracts is yet un demonstrated. BIG RAILWAY COMPANIES IN ON THE GROUND FLOOR Men who are familiar with the oil deposits of California and Texas say thai it is probably conservative to es timate the value of the Southern Pa cific's oil land at *100,000.000. Atchison has Invested and is investing an ag gregate of about $7,000,000 in oil prop erties and these are estimated to be worth today between $15,000,000 and $20,000,000. Like Southern Pacific, Atch ison Is buying the larger part of its fuel requirements, which run up to 5,000,000 barrels a year, although it could easily produce the whole quan tity at once if it so desired. 6 Cents a Share The Price of Second Block Mldwny-MarU'npa Crude Oil Co.
