MINERS ESPOUSE OIL MEN'S CAUSE Sierra Madre Club in Interest of Southwest Addresses Members of Congress PICKETT BILL FOR MONOPOLY Letter to Senators Asserts That Measure Would Conserve Oil for Railroad • At a meeting of the directors 'if the Sierra Madre club, held Friday, it was decided to take further steps to aid the fight now being waged on behalf of the oil operators of California, and with that idea in view the following letter, sent out under special delivery stamp, has been forwarded to every member of congress. ! It will bo deliv ered at "Washington a few days after the arrival of tho delegation which left Thursday night, and will greatly assist in bringing to the attention of congress the gravity of the situation as viewed in California: • "The Sierra Madre club, the first so cial organization of its kind In tho United States and consisting of nearly 250 of the leading oil and mining ope rators of the great southwest, respect fully bespeaks your attentive consider ation of the views of the delegation of oil operators now on its way to Wash ington to protest against the enact ment of the so-called Pickett bill and other similar measures which seem to threaten the very existence of the great petroleum industry of the state of Cali fornia. "The ""delegation, which consists of eleven well known men, seven of whom are members of thin club, is hacked by the united support of the thousands engaged directly In the production of oil, and,by all those who realize the immense importance of . this Industry upon tho commercial supremacy of the entire state. ' ./.'" CANNOT CONHKUVK Oil. "We submit to you the evident fact that from. the very nature of Its oc currence oil cannot be conserved in the same way as coal or other mineral products. Through the (311 fields of Cal ifornia tho Southern Pacific railroad owns every alternate section of land, under United States patent, and it is certain that the reservation of the gov ernment land will permit this corpora tion to drain tho same through wells on Its own possessions, in its own time, and to the everlasting loss of the independent operator and the entire state. In other words, the question of true, conservation does not . enter Into this matter in any way; but If the Pickett, or any other. measure, should eventually 'become law, it will bring with it merely conservation of the mo nopoly of the Southern Pacific railroad, corresponding •• injustice •to the hardy men who v have developed the fields to their present state of productiveness, and tremendous loss to the entire state. "For these reasons," and, for many others to be presented to I you |by the delegation in person, the Sierra Madre club respectfully asks that you at least consider :the matter from the viewpoint of the delegation, and then, if consist ent with your sense of Justice, you do all in your; power, to preserve for the people the right •to the fruits of their labors in ■ taking ■ from . the ground a fuel which Is of the most vital impor tance to the commercial development of the entire Pacific coast." • ; » — ABOUT 1500 BARRELS COAUNGA, May 7.—The Kern[Trad ing 'and Oil company, on section 35 --19-15, lias brought In well No. 11, which Is now making about 1500 barrels v day. TWO OUTFITS ERECT DERRICKS FOR RACE MAHIfOPA. May 7.—A lively rare is promised MtWOfln the (!. K. OH oom pany, which la drilling the Wheeler- Bancrofl hodllnpi southeast of Sunset, and K. E, Qrahain, on the northeast quarter of section 20-H-20. .Some tiino ago Qraham unloaded rig materials there, but has not yet built a derrick. The <!. I!., which claims the land under an older location made by tin- Wheeler- Bancroft, shipped a rig into Connor ■tatlon and is now haulinK it over. Both parties, it is understood, will im mediately start to work building der ricks. William <'asey, formerly super intendent tor tin- Wheeler-Bancroft, has taken charge of the work fur the (!. It. There are two nood water wells on the Wheeler-Bancroft which will supply water to the (i. EL It is not known what arrangements Graham has made for water. No further work will be done on the Wheeler-Bancroft hole for the present. CALIFORNIA MIDWAY FLOWS 1000 BARRELS Well No. 1 Maintains Steady Out put-No. 2 Will Probably Sur pass the First Producer Tho California Midway Oil company, which is already getting- a steady flow of 1000 barrels a day from well No. 1, is building great expectations on Its well No. L', ROW down 1642 feet, with the special California UVi-lnch casing. It la the intention, according to-Treas urer A. T. Jergins, to continue this casing down to 1800 feet and then run 10V»-lnch casing 1000 feet more. This will take it through all the water strata, and enable the. drillers to go into the oil sands with 8%-lnch easing. This is twice the size of cas ing used by any well In the district, and a proportionately large (low is expected as a result. well No. 1, one-quarter of a mile away, has only 4Va-inch casing, and Its 1000-barrel output is the basis of the computation that No. 2 will produce at least 2000 barrels. No. 1 jumped from 700 barrels to 1500 when the circulating tube was sunk to within four feet of the bottom, but this ma only Intermittent, and the well lias settled down to a steady 100-bar rel basis. So long as it keeps this up there will be no attempt to force a further Increase. MIDWAY VIEW DIRECTORS VISIT COMPANY HOLDING Thomas Hughes, Senator N. W. Thompson and Dr. J. T. Stewart, di rector! of the Midway View Oil com pany, and Charles H. Treat and Thom as Cassou of the same company, left yesterday for the property. This company is said to have obtain ed options on one of the choice tracts of land near the Lake View, gusher. FOR LAKEVIEW SAND MAKICOPA, May 7.—The M. and M., on the south half of the northeast quar ter of section 36, 12-24, Tuesday started to drill through the cement in well No. 7 (ill the east line, which Is being drilled for the Lake-view sand. The water was cemented off at 1925 feet. The Lake- View entered the big sand at 2525 feet (ii- thereabouts. SHOWS GAS AND OIL COAUNGA, . May . 7.— Reports from Urn Bohemian on section 22-21-15, which are being kept quiet,,are.that there is a * showing of both.gas > and oil, a The hole 15:3640 feet deep* with 6 5-8-Inch' casing.; LOS ANGELES HERALD: SINDAY MORNING, MAY 8. 1010 PALMER NO. 2 STARTS BETTER THAN GUSHER May Eclipse Famous Santa Maria Well Although Finished at Less Depth SANTA MARIA, May 7.—Palmer No. 3, finished at a less depth than No. 1, tho gusher, is making several times as much oil as the latter at the same age. It Is probably good for a daily yield of 250 to 300 barrels and It would occasion no surprise if the well should enter the class of big spouters when the sands are out of the way. The future of the Stendel No.. 1 ia generally thought problematical, owing to the water troubles, but the ground is proved to the fullest extent. Six wells are pumping in Cat canyon, viz., the Palmer's two, the Union's Bell N'os. l and 2, the \.em Alamos Petro leum No. 1 and the Dome No. 2. News is encouraging from the west, New Pennsylvania and Henderson. The Associated is getting nearly all tho Palmer's output, as the amount only exceeds by very little what the contract calls for daily. What is left over goes to the Union under con tract that gives that company tho second call on the production. SANTA BARBARA CUTS OFF NORTHERN CRUDE SANTA BARBARA, May 7.—Since the Union was refused leave to land Santa Maria oil from its tank vessels and withdrew from tho local market no northern oil has come here. AH the local consumption, Including fuel, gas and road making oil, comes from Suin merland and Santa Paula. The rate from the latter point is much loss than from Santa Maria. The Associated is making no effort to get trade, although its pipe line terminates at Gavlota, where either rail or water transportation is to be had. Local con sumption amounts to a few hundred barrels daily. MERCHANTS AND BANKERS WILL START THIS WEEK BAKERSFIELD, May 7.—The Mer chants and Bankers' Oil company, which recently took over the northwest quar ter of section 20, 28-28, formerly the property of the Reed Crude, is. getting ready for active development work un der tlte superintendency of H. J. Ty ler. Mr. Tyler has been laying a water line from the Rahbler lease, and ex pects to start drilling about Saturday. He plans to' put down eighty wells. Superintendent Tyler was formerly in the Burmah oil fields. WILL RECONSTRUCT MILL GOLDFIELD, May 7.—Structural steel and other material for recon struction of the damaged portion of the Consolidated mill will begin to ar rive during the coming week, and re pairs will be rushed to completion as fast as possible. All of the debris has practically been Cleared away, so there will be no delay in reconstruction when the material arrives. The mill is running smoothly with seventy stamps, and handling from 600 to 650 tons of ore a day. TOOLS DROP IN WELL MARICOPA, May 7.—The Ethol D. No. 7, on the south line of the south east Quarter, 36-12-24, struck :i a' gas pocket Monday at 700 feet which threw tho tools out of the hole. ,In coming down I the weight broke the cable, and the tools fell back Into the hole, neces sitating a fishing Job. . . " These 'gas: blowouts, are frequent In this locality, but are not always so severe. • ■ ,■ . DRILLER EXPECTS GUSHER SAND IN SECTION 15, 31-22 BAKERSFIELD, May 7.— T. F. Fox of Lompoc, who recently purchased the southeast quarter of the southeast quarter of section 15, 31-22 from J. C. Yancey, is goinp down alter the. gusher sand, which Mr. Yancey and other! declare is certainly under the land. Mr. Fox has one 100-banel well finished at a depth of about 1000 feet, and is down 1090 feet on the way to the ex pected gusher stratum. The fact that the first sand yields so well is con sidered a most hopeful sign. Section 15 adjoins the Bear creek land on the west. It is about two miles northwest of the Santa Fe's latest gusher on section 25 and is in direct line with the trend of develop ment in the North Midway gusher belt. Yancey and his associates retain the southwest quarter of the same sec tion. WORK WILL BE STARTED ON SAWMILL FLAT DAM NEVADA CITY, May 7.—Superinten dent W. G. Shand of the Northern Water and Power company expects to start work on the big dam at Sawmill Plat, ten miles above Granvllle, in about a week. There is still some snow in that vicinity, but It is expected within the. next week it will be possible to get in the needed supplies. Work on the new dam will be rushed as fast as possible, and by snow-Hying time next fall it is expected to have the barrier well under way. Last summer nearly 100 men were employed on the dam, and there will be another big crew there this year. It will not be long before the Middle Yuba Hydro-Electric company starts operations In the vicinity of Granlte ville. They intend to employ a large crew building flumes, ditches and dams, while it is expected that the power house on the Middle Yuba river will also be erected. Everything points to a lively summer in the Granitevllle section, as the mines will be working more than ever before. CLAIM JUMPERS RELOCATE PROPERTY IN LITTLE SESPE SANTA PAULA, May 7.—A land jumping (aver has broken forth In the Little Sespe canyon, and several claim! on which the Union has hud locations for years, but has done little or nothing towurd actual oil development, have been relocated by new companies and by individuals. Several companies that are being much advertised are said t" be on land jumped from the Union. The liruntons, who launched the Elk Con solidated, now the White Star, the Cosmopolitan ■ and the Mutual, and have just put out the Little Sespe Oil company, have gone on several Union claims and are in possession. So far the Union has shown no dispo sition to fight. In fact, it seems dis posed rather to let the jumpers go ahead. The matter is belittled by the company. So isolated and difficult of access is the region that what la learned of the conditions is none too definite. It Is known, however, that the Revelation claim is among those Jumped. M'KITTRICK.SUNSET REPORT Bulletin 406, the preliminary report "n the McKittrlck-Bunset Oil region, by Ralph Arnold and Harry R.
