From Mines and Oil Fields STOCKHOLDERS VOTE N PHOENIX EXTENSION Chief Interests in El Paso and Southwestern Favor Build ing Road to Capital BIBBEE, May 9.—The stockholders of the 831 I'iiso & Southwestern will vote on the proposition to extend the rnll road from lienson to Phoenix, June 1. If the majority of'the stockholders Favor the rhoenix extension, It settles tor :ill time the question of this road being built Into the Salt River valley and assures Phoenix what will be part of another transcontinental railroad. Vive President A. C. James, who was in I'hoenlx recently with Walter Doug las, made the announcement in lilshee that the stockholders were being called to a special meeting to vote on the rail road extension. That the directors and officials of the Ell l>iiso & Southwestern have already decided among themselves on the pro posed Benson-Phoenix extension !■ plainly Indicated by their action in call ing this meeting of the stockholders. Walter Douglas has paid no fewer than three visits to Phoenix during the past few weeks, each of them for the purpose of looking over phoonlx and the Salt River valley as a field for the HI I'aso & Southwestern road. On the last visit Douglas brought Vice President James, and after the latter had viewed the local situation it is said that all question of the ad visability of extending tha road here was removed. All that can now prevent the Impor tant announcement that Phoenix Is to have the El Paso & Southwestern is the vote of the stockholders to the contra ry, and this is highly Improbable In view of the fact that James, Douglas and those they represent hold a biff ma jority of the stock In the road. ACTIVITY INCREASES IN KETTLEMAN HILLS The many reports that are coming In from the east slope of tho Kettle man hills suggest increased activity In that district. A rig has been built on section 13, 23-18; lumber and rig timbers are on tho ground for a full standard rig on section 22, 23-18. A large amount of material is on the ground for rigs and buildings in the vicinity of the Baird Oil company, waiting the development of tho com pany's well. It would appear from investigations mado that all mineral lands have beon located, cabins and men are on a num ber of sections, indicating a determina tion on the part of the promoters to hold the land ngalnst Jumpers. Loads of material are being hauled every day; considerable road work has been done through the hills to enable ma terial to bo landed where wanted. A large acreage In township 22 south, range 18 east, stands of record In the name of Rudolph Spreckels, and many predict that there will be considerable development work in that locality soon. STANDARD UNLOADS RIGS FOR EIGHTEEN WELLS Prepares to WifHcat Extensively in Withdrawn Territory of Kettleman Hills Word has been received from Hu ron that the Standard Oil company has recently unloaded several car loads of lumber and material for drill ing rigs, and it Is said that company is getting ready to drill eighteen wells In the Kettleman hills. The Standard has been noted for Its wildcat opera tions In California, but evidently the big company has some good reasons for starting eighteen rigs to hold loca tions In the hills. Most of those operating on govern ment land are holding back, and are not even erecting derricks without be ing forced to it by some person Jump- Ing the land. But the Standard seems to have no fear of any entanglement with the government, and the material at Huron substantiates this fact. On the other hand, there Is a pos sibility of some arrangement with the original locators on the land, and the Standard may be expending the money for rigs and taking a chance that con gress will uphold the withdrawal of land, making It effective only upon operations begun after the bill goes Into effect, if it does.
