FINANCIAL-COMMERCIAL LETHARGY HOLDS MARKET IN GRIP Inactivity in Foreign Marts Offers Discouragement to the Speculators HOCKING VALLEY DEPRESSES Necessity of the Extensive Sale of Bonds Abroad Is Empha sized in Money Channels NEW YORK, May 17.—The stock market sank into a lethargic state to day. The failure of the reopening of the foreign stock markets to revive any activity in the dealings here was a discouragement to the trading element. Some influence was allowed to the Hocking Valley receivership as a factor Jn the stagnation. The Hawley projects of consolida tion and extension furnished about the onlySnatter of that kind now available for the consideration of would-be spec ulators and the check thus opposed nullified its possible effect. The resumption of business In Lon don found that market under the re pressive influence of tho mourning period for the dead king and with tlio prospect of another adjournment on Friday for the funeral ceremonies. A desultory attempt to renew the advance In Reading was followed by a languid bidding up of Brooklyn Transit, which about exhausted the resources of the market. The continued sluggishness of the. bond market and tho conservative views held regarding the money mar ket strongly emphasized the Importance of an extensive sale of bonds to for eigners Rates on mercantile paper ;n, rising again with no demand on the part of tho bankers for small sup plies In the market. The protest! acalnat the proposed increase in rail road freight rates voiced from rlir ferent quarters are not without effect OH views of values of stocks, the in creased revenues promised by these advance! having played a large part in the more hopeful speculative senti ment lately held. <mi the side of crops, decisive ten dencies are lacking still to frame defin ite speculative views. The report of dellcio.nt temperatures contained n the waether bureau's weekly bulletin was supplemented by forecasts of further frosts tonight in regions where both the cotton and grain crops would be itffivtod. The strength of the wheat market In fact of iniistdrnihle speculative liqui dattofl was remarked. Bond* were heavy. Total sales, par value, JI.BSS.OOO. United States bonds were unchanged on call. Brokers had plenty of orders. In the bond list the market was' quiet, and there was practically no change under that head. Th.i bank stock, showed changes In only two cases. First National Hank being offered at 205, 195 bolng bid; this Is a slight decline. Merchants Hank and Trust Company was 181 at 150. which Is also a shade below the regular quotation. There was only one In quiry In the balance of the list, which was for Central National, being 175 at ISO. In the public utility list Home preferred and Homo common both showed quite a material Increase, and there wero good buying orders on the floor all during the call. The oil list was particularly active. Asso ciated opened up at 51 and then weakened off Bllghtly, but closed strong at 50%. at which price 200 shares changed hands. The next ac tive trader on the list wan California Midway, which showed a decided Inclination to sag oft all day long. The first sale was mada at 56%, selling as low as 54% at the close. Mex ican preferred sold at 68 and was strong at that price. Ollnda Land opened up rather weak, but the bid price wan moved up peg by peg to 5674, at which price 1000 shares came out; 600 sold at 67 an 2000 at 56V&. Cleveland does not show any change. Coallnga Central was strong at 64. Union Oil was traded In quite extensively in the afternoon, opening up rather weak on the morning call, with no Bales taking place. In the afternoon it moved up rapidly to 10714, at which price several hundred shares changed hands, then selling down to 107 V«, two or three brokers trading In the stock at those figures. Five hundred New Pennsylvania changed hands at 92V4. This is quite a llttlo break in this stock, but, of course, as this was not a board lot It Is hard ly a criterion as to the price. American Petro leum common sold at 66. Oleum, in the non producers, was the only one traded in, It re maining firm at 8. " . California Hills, which has had such a phe nomenal rise, sagged off perceptibly yester day morning, being 2 points lower than the high point on Monday's market, but the un dertone was good and the price remained firm, with plenty of good buying orders In sight. , Taken as a. whole, the market wag one in which brokers could get good action, and there was a decided Increase In the trading. C. Wil- Hon, member of the Chicago board of trade, New York stock exchange and San Francisco bond and stock exchange. 212 West Fifth street, Los Angeles. CHICAGO, May 17.—Extreme dullness pre vailed In the wheat market until the last halt hour; the market then scored a sharp advance, gaining fractionally pn yesterday's last. News was again quite bearish, except for a continu ation of the reports of Hessian fly and con tinued plowing up of wheat in Illinois and Missouri. A late report told of a strike at Buenos Ayres and work stopped on shipping there. No improvement In the cash trade. The southwest continues to report wheat car ried over unsold, the only demand being for best cars. In the local market the only sala ble cars are contract or near it to mixers for May delivery. The sales on the weak places today were taken by the commission houses, leaving the sellers, who were mostly local traders, short. The congestion in September keeps the market sensitive, and when some buying took place by a leading local profes sion it found the market bare of oerings. Corn was firmer. Shorts covered on some reports of replanting necessary as a result of recent cold weather in important sections of this state and lowa. Wet weather over most of the corn country today, but the forecast is for fair and warmer. Oats dull. Considerable long oats for sale on all rallies. Weather better for the growing crop, milder and wet, but fair forecasted Provisions sharply higher all around. Pack ers were the best buyers, while the offerings were scattered and limited. Fairly good south ern demand for meats. .MARKET RANGES M r EAT & ,?if- a July ■■■■■'::.. 1-03 1.03% 1.0*4 1-03T4 «.:::::::: *& & $8 $5 £*-•:::::::: £3 :S :?
