LOS ANGELES HERALD SUNDAY MAGAZINE NOVEL MOTOR SLEDGE FOB THE ANTARCTIC. 'ENGLISH WALKING ENGINE AND FIVE-TON TENDFJt. MAY 22, 1910. PROGRESS in the WORLD OF MECHANICS Vacuum Auto Sweeper HEBE is a new German street •weep ing device now in use in Berlin, the cleanliness and beauty of which city now mirpnUOl even Paris. The motor Dot only furnishes driving power for the wagon, l>nt runs the brushes ami fan, the dirt being naked into a funnel, from which it is conveyed to cans, which are easily removed to empty. The motor is at 80 horse power, and the machine sweeps a track seven feet widu at the rate of eleven miles an hour. Antarctic Motor Sleigh CAPT. SCOTT, the English explorer, has tried out the sleigh which ho intends to take with him in his search for the south pole; and he considers that it "ill prove n great help to him on h'.s expedition. As will be seen from the picture, the driving wheels do not touch the ground; ;m endless chain fitted with spuds and pattens passes over thesa wheels and sides under each runner. The appearance when the sledge is moving is very curious, as the chain where it touches the ground seems to stand still while the sledge slides forward over it. This, in fact, is what actually takes place, the upper chain traveling forward at twice the speed of the sledge. French Auto Searchlight THIS fine machine is onp of the de velopment! of tlie automobile, and is likely to be extremely useful in civic as well as military work. One great ad vantage if tli.it the searchlight may bo operated while the automobile is speed Ing along at the rate of sixteen miles an hour, the eighteen horse power engine bring ample to provide for both opera tions. The light is of 7,000 candle power, and the machine is geared to take a gradient of 15 per cent The French war oflice has ordered a num ber of these machines, believing that in them they have something superior to those devised by any other country. The auto searchlight has been found of prac tical value in certain American fire de partments, but the ultimate superiority of a vehicle driven by the same power as that which supplies the light over that of a horse-drawn wagon appears to be unquestioned. English Walking Engine THE English walking engine, which has been in demonstration for nearly a year, has been perfected to the extent that it is now a commercial proposition. Moreover, a five-ton tender on the same principle is an adjunct to the engine. The advantages of the in vention are that it walks on its own track, and is thereby enabled to tra verse what would be impossible ground for the ordinary type of vehicle. Soft sand, swampy ground, ditches and ob structions of various sorts are covered without difficulty, and the utilitarian value of the invention is already plainly apparent.
