FINANCIAL-COMMERCIAL NATIONAL LEAD IS HAMMERED DOWN Reduction in Dividend Causes Big Slump on the New York Exchange CROP MARKET IS UNCERTAIN Bonds Shown to Be Irregular, but United States Issues Are Unthanged [Auoclated rress] NEW YORK, July Until the re duction in the dividend on National lead was announced the stock market today was a humdrum affair. The news of this action created some spec ulative excitement and its Influence ■was reinforced by the wholly unsup ported state for the stock in the market. Sales of 100 share lots could . be effected only at rapid concessions of 1 to IV4 points between sales. Clos ing last night at 69 3-8 the stock sold as low as 62. Such a violent and abrupt shrinkage in market valuation even of a single security was bound to precipitate some protective liqui dation in other stocks. The effect on speculative sentiment and on the stock market position was enhanced by the use made for two days of vaguely de fined rumors of steps looking to bet ter the copper'trade position to push \ip the price of the metal industrials. The advanced price of National Ijead preferred In face of the demoralization In the common stock was a commen tary on the increased benefit of con serving earnings for the senior secur ity. The simple explanation of dif ferent reduced dividends was that business and earnings did not warrant the maintenance of' the higher rate. The concrete example thus offered of the consequences of lessened trade ac tivity to profits of business made a sharply depressing Influence on spec ulative sentiment. Solicitude was al ready making itself felt for the show ing to be made by the United States Steel corporation in its quarterly state ment of earnings to be published next Tuesday. The regular Amalgamated Copper dividend was not announced until after the close of the market, but last prices'showed some recovery. The earlier feeble influences in the market dropped out of sight in the excitement which followed tho Nation al Lead dividend action. The action of the wheat and cotton markets revived uneasiness over the crop prospects and the effect of the later easing of the wheat market was lost in the general weakness of stocks. Government, disbursements through \y\l \ G» unit-tti. v»i*j**m«— tho sub-treasury continue to add largo amounts to the cash holdings of the banks, the gain from that source since the Uist bank stntement having risen to #60,000. Time monoy here is growing easier and the foreign ex change market was firm. Bonds were Irregular. Total sales (par value) $1,009,000. United States bonds were unchanged on call. CHICAGO GRAIN Bperln' rervlee to The Herald by J. C. Wil son, member cf the Chli'n^n hoard of trade, Mew Yrrk stock exchange and San Francisco bond and stock exchange. 212 West Fifth street. I-cs Angeles. CHICAGO. July 21. -Wheat opened higher, but except for May delivery has not seen aa iTnoil as early hiprh prices since. NevertheleHS it finally responded materially to the bis bulge In corn. The..latter, in fact, was apparently the salvation of the wheat market today, Im- i parting some life and strength to It after It j had developed a dull and dragging tone. Tho cause of the opening bulge was the continued dry weather northwest and higher prices In Europe. Northwest furnished more crop news of the same sensational sort as heretofore. One of the leading Canadian commercial authorities said the wheat crop Is soing back dally, the situation nearing a calamity. This news failed to thrill the trade as when it was Brst received some time ago, but nevertheless had more or less f-ffect. Ultimately corn proved the speculative leader of the entire list. Trade reached enormous pro portions and the advance was Important. Shorts of every sort were forced to cover, the longs, after securing ammunition by early sales, hurrying the covering along hy bidding: for Increasingly scanty offerings. One of the larger longs sold corn steadily all the way up today, the shorts taking the property eagerly. Among the shorts were larger speculators here and east, i and many houses with country con nections. Dry weather was the only material basis for today's big bulge. Claims were heard of damage In prospect west of the Mis sissippi river, with some actually done in the southwest. Cash (pram concerns almost in variably reported fine, crop prospects in this state and lowa, as well as other territory heard from directly. Oats sympathized with corn. Early there were rather heavy hedging* sales, but they were absorbed by commission houses and some was bought by the corn bulls, and shorts then cov ered freely, making the high prices. Crop ad vices keep excellent. Harvest rapidly advanc- In« northward. Provisions ranged higher, principally on out side Investment call and on covering by local shorts. Packers were apparently divided In their attitude on th« market, which proved puzzling to some of the dealers In the pit. • MARKET RANGES WHEAT— Open. High. Low. Close.
