HAD SHARES AGAIN IN DEMAND Southern Pacific Shows a Wide Surplus in Year's Earnings Over Required Dividend $3,000,000 IN GOLD IMPORTED Grain Market Stronger on Ac- count of Demands for Wheat for Export (Awoclnted Press) NEW YORK, Aug. 12.—Tho promi- nent place' held today In the number of railroad shares dealt In and the ex tent of the advance by Reading-, Union Pacific and Southern Pacific was largely due to the wide surplus of the year's earnings over the divi dend requirement shown by the two Harrlman roads and by the Lehlgh Valley, the traffic conditions on which are very similar to those In the Read ing. Tho strength of the Pacifies was also aided by the Indifferent ef fect of the week's Increase In tho Canadian Pacific dividends. The con trast In the prosperous showing made by tho reports of stockholders with th-3 complaints heard from railroad offi cials of tho onerous conditions for op erating railroad! Inspired a more hope lul view of railroad prospects than has been held by tho majority of the stock market element. The preliminary estimates of the currency movement pointed to another strong bank return tomorrow. The ar rival today of $3,000,000 of imported Rold wl»l figure in the showing. Tlu> gain by the banks from subtreasury operation! Is less than last week, and there is a sharp decline in the volume of receipts by express from the in terior, the balance of the movement remaining, however, largely In favor of New York. The increase in bank cash for the week from all accounts is computed to amount to between jr. 000.000 and $9,000,000. The strength of the grain markets was due mnre to reports of revived demand for export wheat than to news of crop conditions. Further weakness was shown by American Smelting, but the general market broke away from that Influence. The proposition to re duce tho output of copper Is supposed t~ threaten a corresponding reduction In the activity of the company. Ttonds were firmer. Total sales- (par value) |1,3t1,000. United States 3's, registered, advanced 1-8 and the cou pon declined 1-4 per cent in the bid price on call. NEW YORK 9TOCKC Special s»rYlce to Th» Herald by J. C. '.- CHICAGO GRAIN Special service to The Herald by J. C. Wll ton, member of the Chicago board of trad*. New York stock exchange and Ban Francisco bond and stock exchange, 212 West Fifth street, L«a Angela*. CHICAGO, Aug. 12.— Popular sentiment be came so unanimously In favor of higher prices today, the result being quite a backset from the highest levels, on profit taking. There was an early dip of about % cent from the previ ous day's closing prices, due to better weather land easier markets In France, but there was a sharp rally later on the export sale of a full cargo Baltimore to France direct, and on re ports of other sales over night to Germany from Chicago and Philadelphia. Receipts of cash wheat here were again large and elevators. Were mainly out of the market. Cash wheat northwest was slow and easy, with nearly all the receipts new wheat. Local professional speculators of the smaller sort were overloaded with wheat during the early high prices, the larger and more successful meanwhile were selling freely. Corn has shovn more strength today than any of the other grains on the floor. Cash corn has been scarce and the over night sales from the country have been very small. Many reports were received that corn needed rain and was not earing well, and country dealers said that farmers were selling little at sta tions.. The advance In prices here, In which the cash corn has led the futures, has greatly increased the sales from the country. Much corn held at stations for 60 cents today has been sold on the bulges. Bids at stations are now much above this. Moot of the sales to day from the interior are for shipment In thirty" days, the country being busy with threshing in a wide area. ' Oato have been helped by the strength In other grains, but have not . been as active or strong relatively as the others. Receipts here and at primary markets, country sales and consignments have been enormous and the of ferings therefore have called for much support. Some of the elevator concerns have bought December and sold May. Cash grain concerns have been doing more hedging both In Sep tember and December, but mainly the latter. Provisions have ranged higher on fairly good buying by brokers acting for a leading local packer, and en good, buying also by smaller western packers. Offerings have bee limited. Trade was of fair proportions, taking the day throughout. MARKET RANGES WHEAT— Open.' High. ' Low. Close.
