Some further selling was In evidence early, apparently designed to test the market, but bears were In timidated by signs of support In tho two of three stocks In which activity centers, and bear selling soon came to a stop. The government report on cotton con ditions was the last factor relied on to awaken any active interest In the mar ket, but both the stock and cotton markets were practically unresponsive to the showing. The preliminary estimates of the week's currency movement bore out the supposition that the drain on the cash holdings of the banks would run to the neighborhood of $10,000,000. The great dullness of the present demand for credits in. New York leaves the move ment without any great lntluence. The Issuance of the controller's call for national bank statements as of September 1 promises opportunity for Interesting comparison with the show ing of June 30 for the light it will throw on the Joan position of the banks in the south and west. The private discount rate In London showed a yielding tendency today, but the foreign exchange rate here was lit tle affected. The stork exchange will be closed until Tuesday. Bonds were steady. Total sales, par value, J997.000. United States bonds were unchanged on call. NEW YORK STOCKS - I Special service to Th« Herald by J. C. WH ion. 212 West Fifth street. CHICAGO GRAIN Special service to The Herald by J. C. Wll 6on, member of the Chicago board of trade, New York stock exchange and San Francisco bond and stock exchange, 212 West Fifth street, Los. Angeles. CHICAGO, Sept. 12.— extremely narrow market with values ranging higher than yes terday's close was Been In wheat today. Gen eral trade limited In volume, but sentiment much mixed and traders generally nervous. Foreign markets, particularly continental, con siderably higher, but exporters report prospect of business even poorer than yesterday. Nev ertheless, a small Int. 16,000 bushels, was sold from Chicago to Hamburg at a special low ocean freight rate that could not be dupli cated. September wheat has been relatively higher than other months today, both here and elsewhere, and this Rave the longs much en couragement. No demand worth mention for ca/.i wheat here. Russian cable news was not as favorable as yesterday. Argentine rains of yesterday reported today as only sectional and did not entirely break drought. Some Import ant sections untouched. Corn was a. dull, narrow affair all day. prices averaged higher early with wheat, but ranged backward later to about yesterday's cloning. • Shipping demand not much better than yesterday, with sales reported at 160,000 bushels. The weather Is slowly warming up, but Is mainly cool, unsettled and showery pres ent and forecasted for most of the belt. Oats followed corn. Trade relatively lower. Shorts early buyers, also some commission demand for scattered Investors. Cash concerns supplied offerings. Yesterday's report of ex ports positively denied today. Th« advance also also shut oft shipping demand. Provision market was a narrow affair and principally In the hands of packers. Some of the latter bought early and advanced prices. Foreign houses sold a little lard. MARKET RANGES WHEAT— Open. High. Low. Close.
