MOTIVE MYSTERY IN ACID THROWING CASE Hennessy Said to Have Pursued Mrs. Jones—Woman Was on Stage Here SAN FRANCISCO. Sept. 17.—Dr. Walter J. Hennessy and Mrs. Metta Bluhm, who are accused of an assault with carbolic acid upon Mrs. Laura L. Jones In a hotel lobby last night, were arraigned today in the police court and held in $20,000 bonds each to appear on Monday next for trial. Considerable mystery enshrouds the case. Hennessy is a former profession al baseball player and until recently was a surgeon in a local railway hos pital, having served also in the same capacity for a street car company of New York. Mrs. Jones Is an actress, and under the name of Laura Lyle ap peared with a stock company In Los Angeles. Her friends say that Hen nessy has pursued her with his atten tions for some time. She met him last night in the lobby of the hotel in which she lived and after an altercation Hen neesy dashed acid into her face and fled In an automobile, together with Mrs. Bluhm, who had accompanied him to tho place. Later they were placed under arrest. Mrs. Bluhm Is tho proprietress of a local hotel. < Mrs. Jones is badly burned on the shoulders and neck and is In such a serious condition that she fell in a faint on leaving the court room today, remaining unconscious for some time. She declares that she gave, no cause for the attack she accuses Hennessy of having made, and cannot explain his action. Hennessy was released on ball late today and was Immediately removed to a sanitarium. Mrs. Bluhm is still In custody. 'TRUST BUSTER' DENIES HE WILL TAKE BOWERS' PLACE Kellogg Says He Has Not Been Offered Solicitorship NEW YORK, Sept. 17.—Frank B. Kellogg, the government trust buster, who has been prominently mentioned aB a possible successor to the late So licitor General L. C. Bowers, is In New York. "X do not believe there Is anything in it," was his comment when asked as to the rumor of his pending elevation to the position of solicitor general. "At least this much Is certain, I have not been offered this office, and I have no expectation that I will be offered It. In any event I could not accept it. I am not a candidate for any office what soever." Mr. Kellogg la at work preparing arguments of the government in the Union and Southern Pacific merger suit, which comes up In St. Paul Octo ber 10. i. A. Severance will be associated with Mr. Kellogg. WILL PRESENT BILLS ON MARRIAGE AND DIVORCE Cupid's Victims May Have to Give 10 Days Notice of In tention to Wed SACRAMENTO, Sept. 17.—A prelim inary meeting of the Interdenomina tional commission on marriage and divorce for northern California was held yesterday at the Westminster Presbyterian church. Bishop William H. Moreland of the Episcopal diocese of northern California presided. Field Secretary Francis M. Moody of Pasadena spoke on the bills to be presented to the coming legislature reative to divorce and marriage. The bills are classed In five sections and are as follows: I—A marriage license bill, providing that ten days' notice must be given by parties intending to be married before a license can be issued. 2—The senate substitute bill provid ing that a divorce examiner must be appointed in every county of the state and must appear in every divorce case to contest the same. 3 —A bill amending both sections of the present law tv punish adultery by dropping out the words "open and no torious" from both sections. 4—A bill providing for the presence of the defendants t > all divorce actions In court at the trial either In person or by deposition whenever they can be found. s—Seven5 —Seven minor bills, all of which were referred to the state legal com mittee for its consideration and action, with the recommendation that the first four be submitted to the legislature in suitable form. Another meeting of the commission will be held In October. CHICAGO ELECTION FRAUDS FAIL TO MATERIALIZE Investigators Find the Bribers of Voters Are Immune CHICAGO, Sept. 17.—Charges of petty frauds that were expected to material ize In large numbers before the board of election commissioners, as a result of repeating and vote buying at tho recent primary, did not show life at tho commission office yesterday. The ardor of some of the Investigat ors was dampened by the discovery that the primary law provides punish ment for the voter who sells his vote or accepts a bribe, but at the same time provides Immunity for the candidate or politician who does the bribing or buys the vote. "There Is nothing we fan d>o in these cases, so far ac the bribers are con cerned, '• said John C. Cannon, chief clerk of the commission. "It seems rather strange, but the law appears to be perfectly plain In its pxpression. It would be practically Impossible to find out who the vote sellers were." 1500 ACCUSE CASTRO TENERIFFE, Canary Islands, Sept. 17. —A manifesto bearing 1500 signa tures and accusing- former President CMtro of Veneauela of organizing a plot in the Canaries against the life of the present Venezuelan executive, Juan v. Gomez, is being circulated here. GAS CONVENTION OPENS TOMORROW Coast Association Arranges Pro gram for Annual Gather ing in This City APPLIANCES TO BE EXHIBITED Local Companies to Be Hosts at Excursions "for Enjoyment of Delegates The eighteenth annual convention of the Pacific Coast Gas association will open in Los Angeles tomorrow evening, and Incidentally one of the largest and most complete free gas appliance ex hibits ever shown on this coast will be opened to the public. The appliance Show is being installed in the Central Park rink, at Sixth and Hill streets, and contains exhibits from gas appli ance manufacturers throughout the country, several manufacturers ship ping goods from New York city and the New England states to exhibit here. The show will be opened tomorrow •vening at 7 o'clock and will continue every day and evening for the week. It will be open to the general public, and exhibitors have arranged a aeiles of coupon contests by which several stoves and ranges of their particular make will be given away lor auvertls- ing purposes. Headquarters, or at least the secret ry's office, during the convention will be locatod at the exhibit. The general meetings of the members of the asso ciation will be held in Choral hall, Au ditorium theater building. The delegates will begin arriving from the north and from Arizona and New Mexico tomorrow morning, and it is expected that fully 250 of the leading gas nrtm of the west will be In attend ance. There is no special hotel desig nated as headquarters. PAPERS WILL BE K£AD Monday evening, with the opening of the appliance show, the convention will be declared officially in session. Tues day at 10 o'clock the first session of the convention will be held, at which a number of interesting papers relating to different phases of the gas industry will be read. The session will be con tinued until Wednesday morning at the same hour, and election of officers will be held. Thursday the delegates, as guests of the Southern California Edison com pany, will be taken on an excursion to Soldiers' Home, Santa Monica, Ocean Park, Venice and {ledondo Beacn, stop ping at Venice for luncheon. Friday the Domestic Gaa company will enter tain the delegates with a trip to Mount Lowe, with luncheon and a general good time on the mountain, and Satur day the Lob Angeles Gas and Blectrld company will be the host on a trip to Catalina. , "Wednesday evening the association members will have their annual ban quet at the Alexandria hotel, a feature of the week's program which will be long remembered by those who attend. Elaborate preparations are being made for the affair by local officials of the association, and several novel features in the .banquet line are promised. W B.
