CHICAGO GRAIN Special service to The Herald by J. C. Wil son, member of the Chicago board of trade. New York stook exchange and Ban Francisco bond and itook exchange, 218 West Fifth street, Los Angeles. CHICAGO, Sept. 20.—An irregular market in wheat, with changes frequent within narrow limits. The trade very largely local In char acter, nevertheless there was enough north western and southwestern selling here, along with th* local, to prevent anything but a moderate gain on the higher cables. The strong start was on these higher Liverpool cables. in turn due to a smaller increase In tha European visible supply than had been expected. The seaboard reported Improvement In the demand for Manitoba wheat, but bids were too low for working. ■ This, of course, makes export busi ness from t.e United States remote. Rallies from the low points were as freqnent and easy as the declines from the high points. Cash wheat ruled weak at Kansas City and St. Louis. Liverpool closed 1% higher, which gave us our support, and but for extreme weak ness in corn the gain probably would have been better. ■ Corn showed' further lon because of fine weather and a sudden loosening, up of farm offerings at lowest prices of the crop. Ship ping demand fair. Soma of tha cash people reported an export call for corn on slight con cessions. Cash eonoerna sold today In expec tation of a larger run soon. Weather fine for the growing crop and reports today very good. Reserves of old corn now beginning to move. With favorable weather the market looks lower. Oats showed further weakness. There was Increased telling by the country, a surprise at the low prices in view of the light marketings during the last two weeks. Shorts, however, had largely covered in the pit, and there w.is p^or support. .•-... Provisions were a shade easier at the outset because of the lower hog market, but the list rallied later on buying of lard by shorts and exporter!, The latter have been making some sales abroad and have covered hedges in the pit. Cash demand for meats shows no Im provement. - MARKET RANGES WHEAT. • Open. High. Low. Close.
