LATEST FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL REPORTS TRADERS PERSIST IN MARKET TEST Operations on New York Stock Exchange Show Only Frac tional Prioe Changes WEAKNESS IN AMALGAMATED Nervous Tone of Speculation in Copper Situation Causes Fear of Break (Associated Pres»> NEW YORK, Sept. 23.—Stock trading resolved itself again today in a series of tests of the tone of the market by the professional element. That Is What la happening from day to day. Pro found Indifference Is maintained by the general public and the capital inter ests are more Immediately concerned with the affairs of corporations. Only fractional prico changes apaln proved to be the outcome of the day. The first movement of tho market to wards a lower level was precipitate and waa the response to the remarks by Commissioner Lano yesterday at tho Interstate commerce hearing into rail road rates at Chicago. His assertion that "we must work out this prob lem on other line* than by the pro posed method of raising the tariffs," was seized on as definitely offtlininß the decision of the commission on the petitions now before it for specific ad vances in rates. The quick check to the downward movemont showed that there was no widespread agreement with tills view. The particular weakness In Amal gamated Copper was due to thn ro ports that Calumet & Hocla had low ered Its asking price for lake copper by %, to 12% c. Tho nervous tone of the j Bpeculatlon gver the copper situation | permeates the whole speculative fab- i lie and any signs of a break in the | copper market are feared for the wi<lr spread consequences which might en sue. Many old rumors were revived in connection with the speculative out burst in Koadlng, including capital re- . adjustment, distribution and concealed assets and so on. Honds were steady; total sales, par value, $3,288,000. United States bonds were unchanged in the bid price on call. NEW YORK STOCKS Special service to The Herald by J. C. C. Wil son, member of the Chicago board of trade. New York stock exchange and Ban Francisco bond and stock exchange, 213 West Fifth street. Lob Angeles. CHICAGO, Sept. 23.—Wneat was again an uninteresting but stubborn affair, with prices covering a narrow range and volume of busi ness light In proportion. Buyers were a little encouraged by official figures of French wheat crop, which make total 93,000,000 bushels less than last year at 263.000,000 bushels, against 366,000,000 bushels a year ago, indicating— from trade estimates—lmport requirements of about 82,000.000 bushels. Borne selling was en c jraged by the forecast of over 15,000,000 bushels as world's shipments. Bradstreet a made clearances for the week of wheat as 1,584,000 bushels, against 2,174,000 bushels last week and 2,974,000 last year. Local sales of cash reported to miscellaneous mills were 74,000 bushels. Including spring, hard winter and Durum. Reported recent sales of red winter were made at cost. Vessel room for wheat is offered at lo to Buffalo. The Modern Mller reported seeding and plowing progressing fav orably, Increase in acreage promised, but lit tle wheat leaving the farm at present. For. eign markets mixed most of them higher. No claims of export business today. Corn rallied some today on wet weather over the corn belt, and good buying by shorts. Sup plies have been forthcoming, largely from In fluential local sources. The advanced ground achieved recently has ben retained. Sales from the Interior have been greatly curtailed by recent decline and the appearance of wet weather and eastern Inquiry was stimulated to some extent. Some export business is being dent almost daily in new and old corn. Oats have bee- only moderately active, value* following corn more than wheat today. Local s. uits covered early and some were selling later. Market lost some of th» advance of the Tro'vlfions were rather slow all day. The market was off a little influenced by further sales of January product, but there was sup port given finally to the nearer months. MARKET RANGES WHEAT- Open. High. Low. Close.
