For, although now on if the biggest oil operators in central Cali fornia, Mr. Spellacy is a pioneer of the Pennsylvania and Ohio oil regions. Be was born in Crawford county, Penn sylvania, nearly a half century ago. Politics is not an unfamiliar game to Democracy's candidate for lieuten ! ant governor, for he has taken a more unofficial part in the party's affairs for years and has served as chairman of the Democratic state central com mittee. He has also been actively identified with movements for civic and general public betterment, to which he has not hesitated to give freely In both time and money. "Tim" Spellacy is extremely popu lar among workingmen, for his gen- I ial, unassuming manner is of the very i stamp that makes friends among hon ! est men anywhere. It has been said of him that he has helped more men down on their luck than has any other 1 .rson in California. CENTRAL COMMITTEE LAX IN FREDERICKS FIGHT The present attitude of the Repub lican county central committee on the Woolwlne charges against Captain J. D. Fredericks is to let Mr. Fredericks shift for himself and tight his own fight. The combined efforts of Mr. Woolwlne and the rank and tile of the party promise, however, to make this attitude rather a warm one for the committeemen. "The committee can hardly be ex pected to handle all the personal re sponsibilities of every candidate," said Secretary Morrison yesterday after noon.
