LATEST FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL REPORTS FRENCH GOLD IS FELT IN MARKET Paris Financiers Believed to Be Behind Yesterday's Largest Stock Dealings GREAT NORTHERN SLUMPS Money Position Shows Evident Improvement and Gives Encouragement (Associated Press) NEW YORK, Nov. 16.— 1t Is gener ally believed that the resources em barked in the largest of today's trans actions on the stock exchange were found in Paris. Yesterday's rumors that the listing of the Union Pacific In Paris was near to accomplishment •were denied, but the speculation still centered largely in that stock and in United States Steel. The manner of execution of orders in Union Pacific was the subject of criticism among brokers owing to its appearance of manipulation. The high opening price was not exceeded and the subsequent sag In the stock and the unresponsive 'ness of the general list to the advanc ing tendency aroused the distrust which prompted selling. The three leaders were bid up again in the final dealings in face of the continued In difference of the list. The poor earnings reported yester day by the Great Northern for Octo ber caused that stock to be under pressure and it dragged other trans continental railways down. Canadian Pacific suffered from the disappoint ment of speculative hopes of an extra disbursement. The money position showed evident improvement and sup plied the most substantial basis for higher prices of stocks. The issuance of tho comptroller's call on the na tional banks seemed to release funds which hal been held back apparently In preparation for the report of con dition. The Bank of England was on riched by the receipt of $5,000,000 gold from Brail], but without effect on the London discount rate, which held steady. Bonds were easy. Total sales, par value, $2,068,000. United States 4's registered declined % per cent on call. NEW YORK STOCK 3 Special service to The Herald by .T. C. CHICAGO GRAIN Special service to The Herald by J. C. Wil son, member of the Chicago board of trade, New York stock exchange and San Francisco bond and stock exchange, 212- West Fifth street, Los Angeles. . CHICAGO. Nov. Wheat prices at no time were appreciably below yesterday's clos ing figures, but they scored substantial ad vances above that level. Northwestern mar kets led this all the way, Winnipeg particu larly strong on the rush to load boats before the close of lake navigation. Early cables told of wet weather In France, unfavorable for seeding; also less favorable crop and weather advices from Argentine. The big fac tor, however, was the evidence of a strong arm under the market on weak spots, and strength at Winnipeg, where considerable ex port business is suspected, but not reported. Shorts were uneasy; some saved disappearing profits, which helped to keep the market tight, and many belated shorts were forced' to cover. Baltimore cash wheat went to a premium over Chicago against quite a discount re cently. Corn was heavy a good part of the day. but rallied late with wheat. The forecast of wet weather helped prices up. There was a good cash Inquiry for old corn today, but very lit tle for new, while the available supply to offer from here appears to be light. Country sales to arrive limited, but consignments are increasing. Oats were very slow and uninteresting In trade. Provisions ranged downward. Influenced by increasing hog receipts west and a decline here of 20c In prices at the yards. There was no material support and values were In clined to sag despite the firm grain markets.
