The morning call was active at 30, and In the afternon weakened to 87% under very heavy pales. The shares, It Is stated, should recover, the decline being due more largely to the selling orders than any real.cause. Amalgamated was again a trader, showing a very heavy decline. Associated also was off and California Midway was down. The whole market was in general very weak at the close. California Midway was oft 5 points. Consoli dated Midway about 2 points, but Union re mained strong at yesterday's prlcn. The bal ance of the market looked weak, but the re action has been so marked that It would not be surprising if the pendulum swung the other way. The industrials and public utilities were quiet, as were also the bank stocks and bonds. New York stock exchange and San Francisco bond and stock exchange, 212 West Fifth mrect, l.us Angeles. CHICAGO, Nov. 17.—Wheat started strong, was hammered lower by pit traders, then ral lied late In the day as a result of heavy ag gregate buying done persistently all morning by commission houses and brokers. Consider able short wheat put out yesterday was cov ered during the bulge. News has been of varying sorts, but the trade has been or a professional sort and the market has appar ently been given -wheat as freely on the bulges as it has been supported on the slumps. There were transfers betwen local cash handlers of 170,000 bushels casli wheat today. Large num bers of offers put out last night brought.no responses, despite the higher Liverpool cables and the advance at the opening hero. Flour output at Minneapolis last week was 100,000 barrels short of a year ago, but mills there am now grinding rapidly to get flour and feed east of the lakes before navigation closes. Rains in Argentine worn confirmed, but some cables claim move needed. No prospect of ex port business in Manitoba, but shippers have been good buyers at Winnipeg again today, Corn developed a great deal of weakness to day although prices were very stubborn in their decline. Breaks of 2c to 3c in cash corn at Omaha and of 3c at Kansas City gave the trade some indication of the market s trend. Consignments here increased slowly, but local supplies are light and cash corn held steady for new and advanced %c for old. The latter la wanted east, but none to'be had there, and shippers are unwilling to ship it to take chances of possible competition on arrival with lower priced new. There was a big trade in oats rhero was a beginning of December liquidation, attended by some speculative raiding and son stop loss selling, the shipping call meanwhile being quite discouraging. The general trade In provision products was broader and largo quantities of May pork, January and May liba changed hands. Lard war quiet, but the November gave signs of liquidation bring over. The feature was the scarcity of general offerings, and on the other hand there was every evidence of good resting buying orders on the slight declines. MARKET RANGES WHFAT— Open. High. Low.
