Foreign Banks Make Strong Re

[Associated Press]
NEW YORK, Nov. 25.—Tho neglect
of tho stock market left It nearly idle
today and tho price movement was the
merest drift. There was practically no
outside participation in the dealings.
The remnant of the week after yes
terday's holiday gave such a small
promise of . profitable activity that
many brokers did not take the trouble
to attend.
While the holiday period was called
responsible for the neglect in part it is
recognized that deeper underlying
causes also are at work. Apprehen
sion is growing that the period of trade
revival must be set forward to some
time next year.
The week's currency movement has
been in favor of the New York banks
both from the interior and on the
subtreasury operations and a gain of
nearly .3,000,000 in cash, allowing for a
$500,000 shipment of gold to Canada, is
promised by the preliminary estimates.
The foreign state banks of England,
France and Germany all made strong
weekly returns and the tendency of
discount rates is downward in foreign
markets. The foreign exchange mar
ket averaged higher in the morning
owing to a rapid fall In interest rates
here. The action of the stock exchange
authorities in admitting Lehigh Valley
to the list gave seme slight Impetus
to the speculations In Reading.
There were rumors also that a de
cision was imminent In the anthracite
trust cases in the United States circuit
court at Philadelphia. A less serious
view was taken of the Mexican situa
tion than earlier. Union Pacific ended
*4 higher than on Wednesday, Reading
unchanged and United States Steel v.
• cent lower.
Bonds were irregular. Total sales,
par value, $1,682,000. United States
bonds unchanged on call.

the market what strength lt had. Aside from
new estimates on the crop's size and guesses
on the government report to be published on
December 9, there was nothing new to relate.

It Is a Mistake to Think
That Safe Deposit Boxes are for the rich
alone, and useful for Stocks and Bonds
and Diamonds. Most persons and fam
ilies have Treasures as precious to them
as gold and gems. The loss of these by
robbery or fire would cause much pain
'i and regret.
Household treasures.family heirlooms,
important papers, your jewelry and sil
verware are not safe if stored only in your
house, even when you are at home. Think
of the added risk when you are away.
In the Safe Deposit and Storage De
partment of this Bank your treasures
would be beyond the reach of Burglars,
Fire Water and afj other dangers but
would be readily accessible to you.

Stronger Tone in the Butter Mar
ket-Potato Handlers
Are Optimistic
The produce market Friday was without
special feature, except that dealers were
kept busy stocking up after the record
breaking rush of business preceding Thanks- ,
giving. A number of the wholesalers were
practically sold out in certain lines.
Sales at the call session of the exchange
Included onu car of fancy Oregon Bur- 1
banks to arrive, twenty-five sacks of fancy
sweet potatoes, twenty-five sacks of Aus
tralian brown onions, fifteen eastern ladle
butter, fifty cases of Petaluma eggs, fifty
northern fresh cheese, twenty boxes of ap
ples, one car of fancy Oregon potatoes,
Immediate shipment; one car of Oregon
onions; two sacks of No. 1 filberts, ten
sacks of California peanuts and four bar
rels of Jersey cranberries.
Butter receipts for two days were down
to 44.000 pounds, and the market was re
ported strong at present quotations.
No change. In eggs.
Cheese prices remained the same as on
the day previous. The market is steady at
unchanged prices.
Potato receipts for two days were ex
ceedingly light, and the market Is strong.
The market Is firm on the river. Whether
prices will go materially higher on pota
toes for a while Is questionable in tb* minds
of large operators.
Enough flsh to meet demand.
Receipts of produce were; Eggs, 131
cases; butter, 44,084 pounds; cheese, 1510
pounds; potatoes, 1610 sacks; onions, 300
sacks; sweet potatoes, 335 sacks; apples, 604

Special service to The Herald by J. C. Wil
son, member of the Chicago board of trade,
; New York stock exchange and San Francisco
bond and stock exchange, 212 West Fifth
street, Los Angeles.
CHICAGO, Nov. 25.—The market has been a
choppy, nervous affair, with rather heavy un
dertone all day. Nevertheless there has not
been much general pressure, as recent short
sellers- were acting with much caution. The
strength of corn was c. material help to the
wheat market. Numerous cables recorded
rains In Argentine, the latest ones saying that
drought was reduced. European market. were
weak yesterday and today and Canadian also
declined. There were indications that the
leading local bull Interest was supporting the
market on weak spots and possibly reselling
on subsequent swells. It was claimed that ex
porters were buying futures at Winnipeg, but
there were no reports of export sales. Cash
wheat premiums were firmer for choice wheat
on track.
Corn started weak, but ranged higher later.
There was free buying by the Armour Grain
company, which waa credited with having
taken a good deal of corn off the market. Thia
led to buying by shorts in general. Weather
ideal throughout the corn belt. There waa
. quite a liberal movement from Argentine; the
shipping call waa not as brisk as expected.
Nevertheless there were fair sales to catch the
last boats out of here thin year.
Oats followed corn. Considerable buying by;
shorts early, but also fairly influential selling
on rallies. The market ranged within very
narrow limits and finished about the same as
on Wednesday. The cash demand only fair.
Provisions have shown material weakness to
day. There has been Important January liqui
dation and much changing over to May. Sup
port has been poor at all times. Packers are
making contract product now because of the
, slim cash trade.
