LATEST FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL REPORTS; STOCKS AND BONDS COMBINE CAUSES STOCK WEAKNESS U. S. Steel, Union Pacific and Reading Remain the Cen ter of Activity HILL'S TALK AN INFLUENCE Evidence That Wealthy Specula tors Are Reversing Posi tions Is Offered (Associated Press) NEW YORK, Nov. 28.—A number of financiers combined t.|> cause the acute weakness of stocks today. Tho most significant factor In the day's greatly expanded dealings, however, was that United States Steel, Union Pacific and Reading held the over whelming preponderance of activity over the whole market combined, a condition which has characterized these stoclis for weeks. This fact of fered convincing evidence that reversal of position by the small group of wealthy speculators and bankers who have practically carried the whole of recent markets was in progress. The fact which seems to have most Influence on this action by thr leading speculative forces was the Interview sont out from St. Paul yestordaV with riinlrman James J. Hill of the Great Northern railway. The picture lie painted vim a gloomy one. of a halt in profitable activities throughout next year as a penalty for the world's past extravagance!. An effective and timely supplement to Mr. Hill's interview in forcing the decline in prices was the tone of ad -1 vices from the iron and steel trade. Bonds were easy; total sales, par value. $2,033,000. United States bonds were unchanged on call. NEW YORK STOCKS Special service to The Herald by J. C. NEW YORK, Nov. 28.— Some of the large traders took profits In cotton today, probably with the view of taking It back cheaper. The weakness in Wall street prices had much to do with the weakness also, as the feeling of uneasiness seemed to spread from one market "The" New Orleans Times Democrat estimate was made public and the traders construed It much in the manner In which their market commitments stood.
