12 LATEST FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL REPORTS; STOCKS AND BONDS MARKET WEAKENED BY STEEL RUMORS Report of Partial Shutdown of Big Plants Denied After Close of Business TAFT'S MESSAGE PLEASES Wall Street Finds Comfort in the President's Utterance About Corporations {Associated Press] NEW YORK. Dec. «.—Heavy selling of United States Steel shares based upon rumors (which were officially de nied after the close of trading) that the company would soon announce a partial shutdown at some of Its plants j because of the poor business outlook I caused a general unsettlement of prices In today's stock market. The move ment was of fairly large proportions and in numerous Instances brought ; stocks down to the lowest level record In some weeks. The movement be^an ln the after noon, some time after the publication of the president's message, which was ;in no sense a factor. Indeed, conser vative Wall street seemed disposed to I extract much comfort from the pres ' Jdent's recommendations, particularly '"his plea that no legislation dealing •with regulation or control of corpora tions be enacted pending further test ' of existing laws. His efforts at Increased economy ln J the conduct of governmental affairs came In for much favorable comment. During the early part of the stock market session the Gould group dis played a renewal of last week's heav '"4ri6SS St. Louis and Southwestern common and preferred were heavy, and it was a matter of board room gossip that the '■ dividend on the preferred stocks knight be reduced if not entirely sus pended. The weakness in this Issue 'had a sympathetic effect on Missouri Pacific and Denver & Rio Grande pre ferred, but the slump as a whole at tracted little attention, inasmuch as • the demand for these Issues of recent years has been extremely limited. London was reported to have sold 16,000 to 20,000 shares here. The further decline in consols to a new level seems to have cast a gloom ■ ever speculative circles at the British metropolis. Demand for money was light today, but rates showed Increased firmness. No additional shipments of currency ■were reported, but It Is believed that further advances to Canada and the 'pacific coast will have to be made. The bond market was easy, with to tal sales (par value) $2,210,000. United States 3s and 4s, registered, advanced V* per cent on call. NEW YORK STOCKS Special service to The Herald by J. C. NEW YORK COTTON Special aervlce to The Herald by J. C. Wll eon. 212 West Fifth atreet. Los Angelea NEW YORK, Dec. 6.—Lack of eupport and some commission house selling caused cotton to ease off during today's session, but the volume of business was limited. Liverpool changes were unimportant. A prominent bull issued a report that 93% per cent of th* crop has ixyn ginned to December 1, 1910. The National Glnners' association estimates the amount of cotton ginned to December 1 at 10.020,000 bales, and the total crop 11.128,000 bales. The Mercantile Cotton Crop Reporting corporation states that replies from 1197 cor respondents indicate a yield of 10,837,000 bales. In view of the fact that trade conditions abroad are considered fairly good, and as it is probably true that American spinners are awaiting the government's figures before mak ing commitments of a largo scale. It la not improbable that If the government figures ar* under 12,000,000 bale* of the crop the trad* aa a whole will not conalder these prices too high. The glnnera' report by the government Is due at 10 o'clock Thursday, and the final report by the government, giving number of bales (600 pounds), Is due at. 2 o'clock Friday.
