LATEST FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL REPORTS; STOCKS AND BONDS MARKET TRADING FIRM BUT LIGHT Report of Strike Threatened on Western Railroads Causes a Slump at the Close GRAIN MOVEMENT MODERATE Western Money Conditions Show Greater Ease-Exports z for Month Good NEW YORK, Dec. 12.—Apart from Its fairly firm undertone, the greater part of the session, the course of the (lay's stock market was unimportant. Trading was light and again confined to the better known speculative leaders. The market opened, Irregular with pronounced weakness in the Harriman Issues, United States Steel and the other metal Issues. Following its gen eral recovery In a movement led by the coal stocks, the list held fairly well until the final hour, when reports of another meeting of the steel and iron interests and advices ! from Chicago stating that a largo majority of the engineers employed on the western roads had voted to strike sent prices | of active issues to the lowest level of the day and caused a weak closing. The grain movement in the west con tinues to b<- of moderate proportions, although last week's receipts at Chi cago, amounting to 5,600,000 bushels, is an increase of almost 1,100,000 bushels over the previous week. The western money market shows greater ease, but this tendency is attributed to decreas ing business in many lines. Keen com petition for the $3,500,000 South African gold received in London resulted In an advance of l-8d with a division of tho metal, $1,500,000 going to Berlin, tho balance being equally distributed be tween the Bank of England and India. There was no open American demand for the gold despite recent rumors to that effect. Domestic exports for No vember showed fairly large Increases in shipments of corn and cotton, with an extraordinary falling off in wheat. Shipments of this cereal were over i 5,000,000 bushels below November, 1909. Total exports of food stuffs tor ' the '< eleven months of the calendar year are j less by over $56,000,000 than in the cor responding period last year. The bond market was easy. Total sales, par value, $2,207,000. United States bonds were steady. » NEW YORK STOCKS Special service to The Herald by J. C. Wil •on, 212 West Fifth street. C Wll fn, memlw of the Chicago board of trade. New York stock exchange and dan Francisco bond and stick exchange, Sl2 West Fifth street, Los Angeles. CHICAGO, Dec. 12.—The wheat market has been a dull and narrow one moat nt the day but has worked higher at the close. Satur day's closing level to %c lower was the low est figure today, despite the receipt of much bearish n<'W« Higher Liverpool markets, closing 1 to I'j.d higher, proved the deciding Influence, although all continental European markets wore loww. Statistical news al?o bearish. St. Louis claims sales since Sat urday of 175,000 bushels No. 2 red, to be loaded out at on. Cash wheat sales here, 25,000 bushels. Corn started strong and higher with wheat and on active pit buying of December, but It has lagged steadily back to below Satur day's i losing level, Consignments of corn are numerous both from lowa anil Illinois. Trade has not been large. Forecast is for snow and rain from Rockies cast to Missis sippi river. Oats were higher early with other grains, but have sold ■ .fT since. December shorts helped the early market, but receipts at primary markets are more than double last year's and cash prices are weakening. Enormous trade in provisions today. Shorts were forced to cover during a very stiff early bulge and market gave way on the realizing sales made during the bulge and afterward. Enormous lot of short lard covered today Hobs at yards were higher early hut closed with decline of 10c to 20c and trade slow. MAKKKT RANGES WHEAT— Open. High. Low. Close.
