Kumber of shares loaned on, 63. . s We invite the attention of labor inir men to the report It will be observed that an important source of revenue to tbe Association arises from the premiums or discount on loans. The par value of each share is 8200, payable in ten years, and perhaps sotjner. A loan is the pay ment of a share in advance. The premium on a loan is tbe discount which is deducted from the face of the loan. During the early stages of the As sociation, tbe item of discount is nec essarily large because the time is long. As tbe period of maturity is reached, the discount will be proportionately less. This item of discount has thus far been large, and properly enters into tbe assets of tbe Association. It will, therefore, be seen that the prof its on eacb share, as stated above, arises from interest covering a long period of years, and paid in advaace. The present value of each share, as stated above, might seem incorrect, were this explanation omitted. All loans are amply secured by mortgages on real estate. Tbe present income of the Associ ation is about 91,200 each month. This sum is immediately loaned to the members agreeing to pay the highest premium. It is a happy combination of the best features of tbe Co-operative and Savings Bank systems. It has al ready accomplished a good work in Toledo, and its sphere of usefulness will be widened as its means increase. The following schedule will farth er illustrate the operation of the As sociation for tbe period cf six months: Mortgage No. 1, given to secure four loans, enables a citizen of the Sixth Ward to remove an oppressive mortgsge upon his house and lot.' Some drunken workmen were overheard saying that they knew where to get whisky free. They were traced to 434 Ninth Avenue, which was occupied as a fat boiling estab lishment In the offal covered floor a trap, soon was discovered and below this were two large stills. The fer menting tubs were in the cellar to the next building, Na. 436. Through the wall between 436 and 438, an opening had been cot to facfliate the escape of the men running the stills.
