THE PITrSBUKtill DISASTER. An Eiplciltn In m. Nail Mill Filled with Bnay ' l.uborr r??Fifteen Killed?Scorea of Men and ll?}i Wounded, Many Family, e A most terrible aocident oocurred in 1 Pittsburgh, Pa., caused by the explosion 3 of a battery of boilers in the nail f.io- 1 tory adjoining tho rolling mill of Zug & 1 Go. The disaster is only exceeded in j its ghastly features tmd tho misery entailed by tho like horror at the government arsenal in the year 1862, when some seventy-two persons perished, three-fourths of them being girls. Fifteen persons were instantly killed and quite a number suffered the agonies attending fatal injuries and then died, while scores of others escaped with broken limbs or gaBhed heads and face3. Tho building, covering the battery of rotteu boilers, was a one story frame structure, wherein at least 150 men and boys were engaged preparing iron and cutting up this material into nails. This long, low building was filled from one end to the other with rnpid running nail outters, and the concern was working up to its fullest capacity to fill back orders. About nine a. h. there was a terrific shock which was felt in many places throughout Pittsburch. Tn the iinmn. diate vicinity oi the mills it resembled an earthquake and people wero lifted from their feet. Accompanying the shock was a black cloud or mass of broken timbers, pieces of iron, grout lumps of coal, and volumes of jet black smoke, which ascended upward of twohundred feet into the air. Thus, in an instant, the extensive nail factory was reduced to a perfect wreck. The work of devastation was most thoroughly complete, and, to add to the horror of the soene, the displaced timbers and beams, dry as tinder, took fire from the furnaces, while the air was filled with shouts and groans of the poor wretches who lay buried beneath the debris. For a time everybody Beemed paralyzed, but as soon as possible an alarm of fire was struck. The department responded, and the incipient conflagration was soon stopped. Meanwhile the news of the terrible disaster had spread far and wide, and soon the thoroughfares leading to the scene wero jammed by people anxious to learn the details of the loss of lite and limb. Among those most exoited and frenzied v ere women whose husbands, sons and brothers were employed at the works. Those who oould extricate themselves from the wreck did so at onoe, and camo crawling uui. irom unuerneatn tUe splintered timbers, some with faces dyed horribly red from the blood which dripped from tho wounds on the head ; others stripped almost naked, and with faces and bodies black wiih soot and dnst; still others crawled out with the aid of their hands, dragging mash d and broken legs to wkero was day light and safety. It was a terriole moment. Hnndredo of willing hands gathered in a short time, and . removed the poor helpless beings that conld be got at to the storeroom of themill 1 on the opposite Bide of the street. Here ' victims, blackened beyond recognition, 1 lay, and through all the dirt and grim there could be seen the unmistakable pailor of approaching dissolution. To make the scene still more horrible fresh , victims were being carried in at inter- j val*, while those whose wounds bad , been dressed were taken to their homes and to the hospital. This operation was . dolayed by the surging crowd in and about the office, and men who were 1 carrying the litters found it almost im- 1 possible to force their way through the masses of people that lined the side walk. Frenzied women fought their 1 way through the crowd to tho oflioo 1 steps, and with screams and cries de- I manded to be admitted to ascertain if < their friends were among the wounded inside. A number of women fainted, ; ?ua mo wiie 01 ono mau, who bail learned i of her husband's death, made a desperate : effort to commit suicide by endeavoring , to through herself beneath a pair of , passing timber wheels. Another woman managed to elnde those at the door, and gained entrance to the office. She was nearly demented, and was looking for her little son, a boy of abont twelve years of age, named Louis Strong. lie had been in the nail faotory and was missing. He was not in the office, and 1 after assuring herself of this fact the i mother rushed ont like a mad woman to < search elsewhere. Hardly had she j passed from the door when fonr men t came slowly through the orowd, bearing j the body of a boy. They brought it ; into the office. It was the woman's son, ( horribly multilated and dead. The cause of the expoeion was that j the boilers were rotten, as they had r been used quite a number of years. : Engineer Burke was seriously injured. After the explosion he was found 1 with his hand on the throttle, alive, but unconscious. The loss of life wonld 1 have been greater had not the explosion i occurred when a number of the work- 1 men were at lunch. Pieces of iron, t large and small, were hurled in almost < every direction. A large portion of the , boiler, weighing fnlly three hundred j pounds, was thrown into the Allegheny j river, abont four hundred feet from the . milL Another portion, weighing prob.u_ 1~. It ha* been a desideratum with the medical profession to p< ocum a preparation of iron leee objectionable than ary of those now in nee, which often produce unfavorable effects upon the e\ stem, *specially when prepaied with alcoholic fluids. In many cases of debility ana convalescence from direase, where a tonic is indicated, wine; brandy, porter, etc., have been recommence i, bat these are or vety donbtful efficaoy, to eay i the least. Alcohol is"never digested, ia ranked among the diffusible stimuli, and ia incapable of affording nutrition. It creates generally 1 an unnatural excitement and derangement of 1 the circulation, irritating the whole system by i preventing the blood from losing its oarbon. Again, bow diffioult it is to obtain an artioie ' approaching to purity, almost all the wines, 1 brandies, port ore, etc., being more or lees i adulterated. , Such being the case with fegard to the epiritnonB preparations of iron, and the alco' holio drinks,of which any one can satisfy Lim i self, by investigating the eubjeot, an opportunity is now preeonted in the Pernvian .
