■ i | ast Side -By P. D. One of the great American dreams has long since been held by Mothers who have said, or thought, "My/son, too,. can grow up-do be President." A switch by a local lady cawie the other day. Said she: "My son, too, may grow up and get a Vicuna coat." In this issue is the first of a seven article series by Rep. Karl Wiesenburg of Pascagoula, Miss. The second article is titled "Spitballs, Bedlam And Frustration," and reveals, 3S Mr. Wiesenburg puts it " .. . our laws are often enacted in surroundings comparable to those of an unattended sixth grade class." Other articles have to do with the fact that "The People Have A Right To Know," "Totalitarian Rule In A Democracy," "Politicians Are Numerous, Statesmen Few," "Our Benevolent Tyranny," and "Crinoline And Old Lace." It is my opinion that Weisenburg has done a service to the State of Mississippi by taking the time to write the articles, and it can only be hoped that the people will see what makes the state in its present condition, that is, forty-eighth in every thing, except ignorance. The men whom we elect to represent us reflects to no small degree the voters who put him in of fice. In other words, it isn't just the members of the Legis lature, it's "us", you and me. And we don't look so good, frankly. Strange how it is when someone helps support you they begin to think they have rights. Now, take the case of Easton King of The Chronicle Star in Pascagoula. Just because he's been helping support me for five years and just because he s been making up my little paper each weeek, saving me the trip to Pascagoula, he thinks he has the right to change some of my headlines, as was the case two weeks ago when I used copy from his paper. Should he continue to change my head lines I may find someone else to help support me. I don t know though, that would probably make him just too happy. I don't think it wise to have a supporter too happy . . . they might want to take additional liberties. They have to be kept in their place as I see it. Dear Klansmen: This is a personal note to you. One example concerns a fel low I know who actually took a bath during mid-week, not waiting until Saturday njght as most of us do. Another ex ample concerns a fellow named Dr, Robert P. Stuckert at Ohio State University. Under a one column headline, 28 MILLION WHITES SAID PART AFRICAN," with a sub-head reading, "Anthropologist Does Study In U. S. Dak. P. D. East Petal, Mississippi Sir: This is intended as a reply to the letter of O. C. Marthaler printed in the Petal Paper for July 3rd. The words of Luke 19:27 are indeed barbarous, but it is to be noted that they are the words of one of the characters in the story (parable) Jesus is telling and do not, therefore, necessarily reflect the mind of the story-teller. The parables of Jesus are drawn from the life experiences of his listen ers, and the way the king acts in this parable is typical of the kings of that day. In another of Jesus’ parables one of the char acters says, “I neither fear God nor regard man. . . .” (Luke 18:4, R.S.V.), but I suppose Mr. Mar thaler would not therefore under stand Jesus to be one like him self—one who does not fear God. | Certainly the Jesus who pray ed that those crucifying him should be forgiven and who re buked his disciples when they wished a Samaritan village de stroyed did not teach his disci ples to violently destroy their enemies. The words of Luke 19:27 are part of a warning of the trag ic disaster Jesus saw coming j upon his nation. In Luke 19:41-44 we are told that this premonition caused Jesus to weep. Then, concerning the words of Jesus quoted in the fifth para graph of Mr. Marthaler’s letter: taken in context these words are plainly a forceful way of assert ing that if one is to be loyal to the highest values he sometimes must surrender lesser ones. Jesus wanted to help people see the need for such painful choices (“I have not come to bring peace, but a sword”), but he certainly did not delight in broken fami leis or in hatred or conflict of any kind. Jesus used bold, imaginative language — language which can easily be misinterpreted by the ignorant or the perverse, and such there have always been among the followers as well as among the enemies of Jesus. Karl Wiesenburg of Pascagoula, Miss, in which he discusses the Stale Legislature in Missis sippi.) By Karl Wiesenburg The 140 men and women elect ed to the House of Representa tives are a cross section of Mis sissippi. Since we are chiefly a rural state, most of our representatives are farmers. Forty-nine are lawyers. The overwhelming majority of these men and women are sin cere, honest and conscientious. During their four years of serv ice they are subjected to pressure of a type few of them anticipated before their election. (Continued on Page 2) '- ' f ■ % : • SAYS SAN FRANCISCO'S CHRONICLE Arkansas Knew What l! Wanted Democratic voters in Arkansas have acted just as Orva! Faubus figured they would when he obliged the President of the United States to send Federal troops to Little Rock to en force the integration of nine Negro high school students. Last September, Governor Faubus, wanting a third term and knowing the State's tradition was against it, went out of his way* to create the problem that has now resulted in his tri umphant renomination. His ordering out of the National Guard at the opening of school to prevent integration of Central High was an act of defiance of the law of the land which, conceivably, could have defeated his political chances. But the countermand ing act of the President in sending 101st Airborne paratroops to reverse the process made Faubus a hero in the South. The sad result is seen in a 70 per cent pro-Faubus vote. His success will stimulate other yahoo politicians in the South, as will become evident in the course of the fall election campaign, and it will make more difficult the effort of moderate Southerners to bring their communities into conformity with the Supreme Court's intergration decision. The "leadership" of Faubus could win such approval as this because, we are sorry to say, no countervailing moral leader ship for public-school integration has been forthcoming from the White House. It is not sufficient to send Federal troops to see to the execution of the orders of the Federal courts. The troops may have enforced integration for a year, but their pre sence has temporarily defeated the cause of integration and elected Faubus. Throughout history the White House has shown itself to be the most powerful seat of moral force and leadership in the country whenever great national challenges have arisen. Indeed the Presidency can be most effective when the President sets out to give direction to our national goals and purpose. But of course leadership cannot move men and mountains if it lacks positive and vigorous conviction and earnest, thoughtful ex pression. To say, as President Eisenhower has said, that the law of the land must be carried out is both valid and true but it is not enough to say. The people who do not at present believe in the justice of integration require education and persuasion. Un less the forces of law and order accept their responsibility to educate and persuade, unless the supreme executive of those forces accepts his responsibility, the field and the day will con tinue to belong to the Faubuses.
