Book Review (Continued From Page 2) concept that “Comedy is about tragedy.” Things are not fun ny, he points out, in a state of perfection, but in some sort of relationship to how far they fall short of it—“There may not be laughter in hell, but there couldn’t possibly be any in Heaven.” Interesting too are Steve’s discussions of show business and its people: of things that con tinue to amaze, surprise, or i amuse him about it; of wierd or funny or embarrassing expe » riences he has had as a celebri ' ty; of interesting, funny, or sad “characteristics” that have crossed his path. This reader would judge that the dominant motivation in this man’s life is the urge to create. More important to him than material advancements are in tellectual and spiritual develop ments that strengthen and maintain human dignity and stati ”e. No, this book is no rec ipe for “instant success mix.” Steve himself feels that his suc cess came too easily. If this be true, easy success has not spoiled him. His experiences have produced a man broad, deep, humble, compassionate — a fine human being who under stands that to be “American” is not to be a certain color or of a certain creed, or to live in a certain section of the country or the city. Steve is a member of the human race, not just that portion of it within the bounds of the USA. And if he “preach es,” well, that’s okay. He is the sort of man who will permit his listeners to take and sift, keep what is worthwhile to them, and discard the remainder. Not much will be thrown away. —L. E.
