THE DEERFIELD COLORING BOOK ^ J Illustrated by Alice Untermyer, with text by her Mother fj "Grown-ups of Deerfield This is true: Children of Deerfield Are wotching you." Out of the continuing contro versy on integrated housing in suburban Deerfield, III., comes a 32 page coloring book, illus trated by a blond, green-eyed eighth grader at the Wilmot School. The text is written by her mother, a poet and an associate editor of ISSUES. Mrs. Untermy er's poetry has been published in P. D. East's Petal Paper in Missis sippi, the New Mexico Quarterly, and ISSUES. ■ I 1 Although a true story, the I DEERFIELD Coloring BOOK is | neither harsh nor vindictive as it I faces what really happened in the } all-white suburb of Deerfield, III I inois, when a Park District bond I issue referendum was called in J the minimum time allowed by I law, and resulted in the condem M nation of the platted and approv J ed subdivision, in which the I builder intended to sell houses to I Whites and to Negroes. I _ The delightful drawings show I the purposes and pressures that I caused the outwardly peaceful people in the Village of Deerfield to become a divided town, short ly before Christmas in 1949. Susy and Sandra face the chaos of racial hatred in deer field, regarding it as one of the unpleasant and irrelevant adult interruptions to their more im portant responsibility of being children and growing up in an American town. This slim little book is prepar ed especially for children to read and learn and live by. Although it has humor it is not a joke book, and once it has been carefully colored, the DEERFIELD Color ing BOOK will remain a reference of real life and human relations history. | ISSUES Box 32!
