Thinner , e nays uis a physical characteristic - m.xficans. I account for this because ' fact that they are in anew country whose cli taatc they have not Wcoiii-j used. Even the descendants of people who came to America 200 years ao are not fully accli mated This is true, it matters not to what country people may remove. Nat ural history has demonstrated that at least 800 years are retired to acclimatize a nation that has taken up its abode in a new country. "Now, as thinness is a characteristic of Americans, they oujjht to use whatever will make them fat, and they ought not to use what will keep them lean. The habit of chewing gum causes certain juices which aid digestion to flow freely, unmixed with any injurious substance. The habit of chewing tobacco also causes these juices to flow freely, but thetobacco chcirer eiiher expels them from his mouth Sit swallows them mixed with the poison ous juice of the weed. I see you have your notebook out; just jot down this fact: Twenty years ago the rule was that south ern women were thin and delicate; it is net the rule now. Southern women are not physically equaled iu North America. Any physician who is as well informed as he ought to be will tell you that it is true. This change is due to the habit of chew ing gum. You may smile, you may even laugh, if you please, but I am telling you a plain fact. As to southern men, they are as thin and gaunt as they ever were; and so they will remain until they cease to chew tobacco and begin to chew gum." Georgia Exchange. A Natural IVtroleum Hennery Found. Entering through a crevice between two gigantic rocks, the explorers found them selves in a circular basin 300 feet in cir cumference and lofty in height. The floor of this basin is . regularly paved , with broad flagging as if done by the hand of man. From three parts of the basin arose a thin, bluish vapor, spreading through the underground chamber a close, oil-like smell. On investigation this vapor was found to arise from deep seams in tho rocky floor. One of the party produced a long cord and, attaching It to a small stone, attempted to gauge the depth of these seann. No bottom could be reached, however. On the stone being withdrawn it was in every instance found to be cov ered with yellow sticky matter of glue like consistency, ftrongly impregnated with a petroleum odor. One of the party stumbled on a second opening, and this led into a third and smaller chambpr.iu the center of which was a working, bubblirg oil foutaln. This was the pure article . self, clear as if fresh from the best oil re finery. In fact, it was the product of a natural refinery, and the nv vote-'t forces were engaged in its jn.-i;: fa- 1 'e. From deep down in the b.iv.l tuc earth came a sound as of stea..iy c'ii .g, and the oil mass heaved a nd shook at in tervals, as the continued product of thw natual refining process was poured in. Cheyenne Leader. t Shaving a Chinese llaby's Ileaa. One of the first things that happens to a Chinese baby boy after he is born is to be shaved. A barber comes with a razor, and all the hair is shaved off the poor little fel low's tender scalp. After that, baby has to go to the barber for his shave, just as a grown man with a beard might go in this country: but he never seems to enjoy it, nd cries pitifully every time the sharp razot mows down the hair. After awhile, when the hair begins to grow thicker, the head is not shaved all over, but is left un touched iu spots, just as the parents think will look pretty. Sometimes there will be three tufts, each as big round as a silver dollar, one just over the middle of the forehead, and one over each ear. When the hair grows long enough in these tufts. It is braided and tied with bright cord, and then baby looks funny enough to a for eigner, for each little braid stands stiffly up for about two Inc hes, and then Vvps over. The braids look like horn3 on his head, and holes are cut in his green and red cap to let the horns come through. Household Words. j&n Interview with Louise Michel. Apropos of nothing in particular, we ask if she "has ever been married." "No," She assures us. "av.d also yes. To a man, no, because all men, by ro-ason of their nature and education, are emperors. They can not help it, they mean well. But I am opposed to the empire, and am not am bitious to have a personal emperor. Again I say, ye-, I am married. My husband is fantaVlic, variable, capricious, intense. He possesses me. Sometimes he is cruel. Sometimes he stones me in the streets. Sometimes he starves me. lie never has time to adore me. Yet I am his loyal Bpouse. His name is devolution." Paris Cor. Boston H.'. ' Forgot Wht He Wa About. There is a worthy clergyman who is very absent-minded and has a cWt memory. It is a common wi.i. ..:"-n in t J.e pul pit to forgit something. ud thn, of:-n eitting down, to rise up and enmnu -ure his euppiei-u' -try r. r i irks with the exprrs h'u. "By h. v j..
