THE CAREER OF
MOUS HENRY
THE ONCE FA
M. MAJILTCN.
His Fall from a Trapee The Wonder of
Showmen KemiiiLceiMe of Old Clrcrts
Days Saved Money and Fair
Com pc tenc e.
In a cosy home in ElLstvorth street lives
Henry 31. Majilton, who for thirteen years
of bis early life was the wonder of showmen
and who has le?ri for twenty-five years more
than a wonder to those who knew him be
cause of the marvelous cheeriness with which
he has endured a life of physical inaninity
caused by a parah sis of his lower extremities,
the result of a spinal dislocation following a
fall while doing a flying trar?ze act in the
London Alhiunbra in March, lvJl.
His first venture in "the business'' was in
l"S-k5, when he was engaged as a "tumbler'' by
Aaron Turner, whuse circus started from
Hamilton. O. , and worked the season ea-t
through New York and New England. His
salary was i'j a week and found, and the best
Iei formers in the show did not get more than
thrice the sum. Tim Turner, who was the
first to turn a somersault on a horse (with a
pad, was the pruicijial rider, and there was a
four horse act rider and a scenic rider (chang
ing costumes while in full career), a clown,
ac robats, slack roi-e dancer, alut ten per
formers in all, and about sixty people in all
with the sho.v, wbi.-h exhibited in a forty
foot ring under u single pole tent of 100 feet
diameter, holding, on a pinch, nearly 1,U00
people. There was a stand and two shows
every day ; the expenses were not over S'JiK) a
day, and when the weather was good about
that amount was cleared. In those cheap
lays fifty cents adayp.aid for the food for
the men, and from ill' teen to twenty-five
cents a clay for the hor-s. There were no
lady er for iuers w i;h the show and j et it was
considered a very good circus in its day. Ma
jilton was with Turner two seasons, during
which time he invented the three pole tent,
which i'i iniLled a great enlargement of the
canvas, and which is used by all the traveling
tri reuse.-. outnMe of such hi shows as Car
num's or Iroivpaiish's to day. In lSoO he en
gaol witii Spalding 6c Rogers and remained
with them until I'i'i'i, working his way up to
the top of his profession by haid work, so
briety, a genius for univ.-r-.aluy and a rare
invention of iihw and hi'tlit-rio MipjKjsed im
ossible acts, and c.imiiiaiiiiing the biggest
salary of the .lay. lb- was with Hpal.ling &
Rogers when they ran th.-ir i'oating circus up
and diTvvn the Misiippi and ir larger tribu
taries, and it was while w ith these managers
that he made himself fuiuous in hi-i character
of Jocko, in "Jocko;" or, the Kruziliuu Ape.
"JOCKO" HIS OHEAT I'llAKACTEH.
The original of the character was Henry
Leech, an Englishman, whose professional
name w as Otto llorti. His body was of the
size of an ordinary man's, but his legs were
only a foot l'ug, yet siu-h was his agility that
he could outrun, on all fours, a very fair run
ner. His skeleton is in Mine. Tussaud'a exhi
bition in London. The Ravels afterward
introduced the character in their pantomimes,
but it was lelt to Majilton to bring it to per
fection, lie had wonderful strength iu his
hands ami could w alk w ith his hands hanging
under an ordinary floor joist, his whole
weight depending uion the grip letween his
thumbs and their opjosing fingers, with per
fect eae; and -he occasionally astonished a
braggart of thw profession by walking on his
hands on a slack rope or on the hawser with
which the circus was towed by a steamer.
This singular faculty made him an expert
climber and he would run up and down the
interior of the circus and leap the rail of the
tiers and run along them with an agility that
no ap. could excel. He fairly rolled with
laughter when he told how he frightened the
colored jeople on the Mississippi.
On one occasion, w hen he leaped among
them, chattering and grimacing, jmanv
! jumped in their fright through the windows
L of the circus into the river and were rescued
! '.with dilHeultv. "For God's sake, ston this."
jaaid SpanMing afterward, '-or we'll have
aeaa niggers to pa3r tor." lit JJecember, 14,
while playing in Charleston, he created almost
a panic in the theatre. One of the scrub
women was stationed in the third tier with a
it tiffed baby, and Majilton, in h3 Jocko act,
snatched it from her and, jumping to the side
of the proscenium boxes, beat its head against
the wood and then threw it to the sta;'e and
jumped on it, the women yelling all the while
)ind the audience in a terrible uproar of ter-
NONK SINCE CAN DO THEM.
Many of his acts were of his own invention,
and two at least have never been performed
since. In one or two of these he laid on his
back on the end of a iolo carried by a second
on the stage in a waist socket, and in the ap
parently painful and perilous position a third
performer climbed to him and hunac from his
feet and hands, and cut all sorts of didos. It
was to a great extent, however, a trick, as
his waist was incased in an armor from which
protruded in the back an iron peg, which
titted in a socket on the top of the pole, the
peg being pulled into place before he climbed
and after he descended from the pole, and
giving no sign other than that his flesh alone
bore upon the pole's top. The other act was
the double plate spinning, one of the perform
ers standing on the head of the other and
both spinning and exchanging plates by toss
. ing them up and down.
In l"y Majilton and four companions
visited Europe, performing in France, Spain,
Italy, Germany and England, making a great
deal of money and astonishing the acrobats
and gymnasts across the water by their won
derful business. This tour ended with the
accident to Majilton in 1S51. He was for six
months in London under the care of the
ablest surgeons, who could do nothing for
him, and since has resided in Philadelphia.
That he ha?, a competence is well known. 'T
alw ays saved my money,'' he said, "and when
other performers would upbraid me for not
going with th--jn aud spending my money I
would reply that it wa3 my ddty to earn my
salary, and that if I got drenk I could not
act." During LL European tour he and Lis
companions played always for half the gross
receipts. He saved his money and is to-day in
dependent, u bile all theotbersd'ed in poverty.
He has a nice home, a pony phtKlcn in which
he is driven out in good weather and employs
his time with reading and music, being a
vervgOod performer on the violin and flute.
Take loin tV-r all and all, and in spite of bis
alHictioi:., lb nry M. Majilton is certainly a
happv man. Philadelphia Times.

"Why do you want to run for alderman f""
was asked of a 3 omig man atnicted with the
mania last niht. "To bumble family pride,
my dear boy," was the answer. T think I aai
a pretty fellow, and so does my family.
After the election is over 1 am going to com
pile all the bad things said about me and with
Pooh-Hah exclaim: 'Ah, family pride, take
that:' Every'time I get too exalted opinions
of myself I shall take that prescription. It
