"Idont imagine that you intend to j write anything injurious concerning a cer tain individual, " casually remarked an old lawyer with whom I talked on the subject; "but why don't you, in seeking topics, take up those with which you can do good as well as merely entertain?" "Suggest one," I replied. "I will," said he, "by showing you how to benefit thousands of poor families. You will admit, to begin with, that the expenses of the table are largely and unnecessarily in creased by such articles as sugar. Now, wouldn't it be a tine thing to .stop the con sumption of sugar ? Not by coercion, but by exhibiting its manufacture in a way that will spoil every reader's appetite for it. "Will you try? Then spend the rest of the afiernoon with me. " We crossed the river to Hunter's Point, close by that Astoria which the Astors founded as a suburban resort of wealth, but which has of late been malodorous through factories of various kinds emit ting awful stenches. lie escorted me to the source of one of the worst of the bad smells. In a 3rard wrere enormous heaps of cattle bones, with so much meat cling ing to them as the4cnives of butchers had left The remnants of rlesh were putre scent, and the sight was scarcely less shocking to the eyes than the smell was to the nose. A more horrible experience had never been mine. Clouds of steam from great vats floated rottenly oIT upon the air, tainting it for the whole neighborhood. "The meat, when boiled from the bones; was converted into fertilizer; arid as for bones they were subjected to intense heat .and then ground to a powder, to be-mixed with sugar in the process of refining. The lawyer insisted that a general knowledge of these facts would lessen the consump tion of sugar, and thereby help the poor. Jn fairness I am bound to add, however, that the pulverized bone is essentially clean, despite the revolting matter from which it is produced. Historic Long Rides. INotes and Queries. Turpin's ride to York is a myth, though it is based on the story told of Nick, who in 1676 is said to have robbed a sailor at Gadshill at 4 o'clock in the morning, and to have ridden a bay blood mare all the way to York, wThere, after attending to .the wants of his steed and himself, he .dressed himself in gay clothes, strolled to Ihe Bowling Green, and there meeting the lord mayor, asked him the hour. It was 7:45 o'clock. This incident procured for him what old Weller so ardently de sired, "a halibi. " That one horse could have done the journey in the time was a manifest impossibility. In 1831 Mr. George Osbaldeston wagered 1,000 pounds sterling that he would ride 00 miles in 10 hours, and he accom plished the distance in 7 hours, ten min utes and 4 seconds, but he was allowed twenty eight horses, and he was furthei allowed 1 hour, 22 minutes and 56 seconds for stoppages, and he rode round and round the four mile course on Newmarket heath. Cooper Thornhills ride of 21J miles (April 20, 1745,) along the turnpike road, from Stilton to London, from Lon don to Stilton, and again from Stilton to London, was accomplished with nineteen horses in 11 hours. 'S3 minutes and lii seconds, being nearly nineteen miles an hour. Mr. Osbaldeston's time was upward of twenty-eight miles an hour. Coopei Thornhilis nineteenth horse was a huntei belonging to the duke of Ancaster, and he rode it without stopping from the "White Horse" at Wormley. On the fol lowing morning Cooper Thornhill, "quite active and in perfect health, " rode bac'. from London to "The Bell" at Stilton. How a Keporter Matched a Senator. Told on Himself by Senator Groome. Several years ago, wThen I was a candi date for governor of my state, a gentle man in a neighboring towrn, where 1 chanced to be, said that he would oppose me on the ground that I was a bachelor. He wTas older than I was, not the best looking man in the world, and had nevei been married ; so, to silence him, I said in jest that I would bet him a hat I could lind a lady inside of three years who woald marry me, and that was better, 1 was sure, than he could do. I succeeded in backing him down but I got into another ditriculty. One of these newspaper chaps some how or other got hold of what I had said or, rather, what I hadn't said and the first thing that I knew I was published as offering to bet that I would be married within three years. A scribe in Baltimore, to get ahead of his fellows, ventured to give the name of the lady in that city to whom I was engaged. Fropi mv green and salad days to that time I'had not thought of getting married, much Jess of making a wife of the lady mentioned. 1 happened to meet her however, a day or two afterward for I knew her and asked her what she thought of the rumor. She told me laughingly that if it would aid in my election she would not contradict it until after I became governor. I believe that it was never contradicted, and as I subsequently married the lady, it is now too late .to deny it. That newspaper re porter's fertile imagination secured for me the best wife in the world. " 3&cmistments. R0YAL insurance c. wy OF LIVERPOOL. fll'lTAL 6JO.OOO.OOO UNLIMITED LIABILITY.
