A nameless professor relates the following:
During the after dinner talk, the man for
whom I was surveying remarked that mathe
aatics always seemed a very wonderful thing
to him. Thinking to interest him somewhat,
I began to illustrate some of the wonders;
among others, tried to show him the way in
"which Neptune was discovered. After some
twenty minutes of elaborate explanation, I
was somewhat taken aback to hear him say:
'Yes, yes; it is very wonderful, very; but
(with a sigh) there's another thing that's
allers troubled me, and that is, why you have
'. to carry one for every ten; but, if you don't,
twon't come out right." School Journal.
Fashionable Profanity.
In the way of shocking things, fashion
able profanity among wealthy and refined
girls may be mentioned. While it has
not gone to the extent of the worst oaths
from feminine lips in good society, the
milder expletives have come into piquant
use. The evil began last autumn wfch a
vogue for quaint exclamations. These
were at first merely original and curiou3,
and the girl who could make unique ejac
ulations was thereby distinguished in her
circle. Gradually the demand for stronger,
riskier language arose, and the license of
fashion extended to almost but not quite
outright oaths. Now the genuine damn
is not unheard in the boudoir and parlor
of the belle, and she exclaims, "My God!"
on the slightest occasion. The latter of
fense is excused by some in consequence
of French precedent. Parisian ladies of
the aristocracy say "Mon Dieu" com
monly. But the habit has reached its
limit here, revulsion has come and pro
fanity from sweet mouths may be ex
pected to cease this spring. New York

firing twenty-one guns as a national
salute, not only in this but in other coun

partments for information, and was told
that it was a 'regulation.' I knew that
before. I then asked Judge Charles P.
Daly, who knows about everything that is
worth knowning, and Judge Daly couldn't
help me. What I want to know is, why
