'o chiM should be allowed to speak in .tir If vou do not teach your little one to enunciate clearly at first it may be impossible lat r on. But not only be care ful as to enunciation, but as to the use cf words. Take pains to explain why on vord is correct, another incorrect Teach your child how to open the lips well: do not allow him to talk altogether in one key, and take care that any nasal twang is carefully corrected. If a boy talks in a high, e!l'eminate voice, cultivate his cbfct tones patiently, but firmly he will fcli- you in later years for what at present sorely tries his. patience. Be careful that rour girl has that "mosr excellent thing in woman'' a soft voice. Any inclination to stammering should be watched; the child should be trained to read aloud very slowly and deliberately. As it may prove helpful to some one, I will quote a set of rules given by Charles Kiugslt-y to cure stammering, only promis ing that a child could be taught to hold the upper lip down with his finger during his half hour of practice: Open your mouth. Take full breaths and plenty of them, and mind your stops. Keep your tongue qui..t. Keep your upper lip down Use your lower lip. Head to yourself out loud. Read and speak, slow, slow, slow. Hope Ledyard in Brooklyn llagazine. Taking" Care of the Hands. A woman whosa pretty hands are being mined by washing in hard water, writes to ak a remedy. AVatar can be easily sof t eiied with a few drops of ammonia, or what is better, a small piece of lump borax. Warm water, into which enough borax has been dissolved to make the water feel a little slippery when pressed between the thumb and finger, is very good for washing the hands. Hands kept dirty are never smooth and white. Absolute cleanliness is neces sary. Many people who do not work wash their hands but seldom. The day's accumu lation of dirt is allowed to remain on the hands all night. Upon rising, the hands are washed in cold water. The possessor wonders why, when she does no work, her lands do not look any better, if as well, a her chambermaid's. The hands should always be washed in warm soapsuds before going to bed. White s aps are safest. Highly scented and col ored soaps are almost invariably made from raacid and ill-smelling fats. After the bands are thoroughly dried, use a few drops from a lottIe of mixed glycerine and cam phor, which your druggist can prepare for you. Drop into the palm of the hand and tub ou the bands' This will be all that will tene:tss&ry to show a decided improve ! tteut Cincinnati Commercial Gazette. Old Books Made Into New. fl"ell, I gazed at these worn old books bose edges looked so battered and faded, nd I called up my spirit of originality it s a most convenient little spirit, always oniand like a veritable Puck and this ame familiar suggested painting the backs of the fded volumes in the finest, brightest, richest tints upon my palette. "And you may ornament them with a little stenciled card and gold paint," said my little spirit of originality, finishing his lecture. So I cut a small, fancy stencil, simple in design, got out my prettiest paints, held a piece of stiff writing paper over the title and be gan: but it was fun! My "Geography of ie Heavens" soon stood in splendor of blue gold; my "General History" was rich "i mossy green; my "Anatomy" blushed a ry rl, "Ami's German Grammar" turned )el!ow with envy or chrome or ' something Hitly decorative, while my beloved "Fas-qut-Ue," like a child of a modern Midas, turned all to pure gold! Can you imagine the simple necromancy wat turned the unattractive backs to a row tempting loveliness? Eva Best in Detroit ree Press.
