cessful detective of the reputable
kind, but to be a detective of
the 'private agencies I refer to
a. man must have not only
certain kind of smartness, but he must
of necessity be a very mean whelp a
sneak and a hypocrite ot the very
worst kind. A downright honest man
can't be a detective of that sort, no
more than a man of veracity can be a
successful liar. You see his very busi
ness requires him to be a rascal and a
man of false pretenses. And for the
rpn son that such a detective must oi
necessity be a dishonest man, it is
never safe to rely too implicitly upon
his worth He is too anxious to maKe
out a case against the man he is se
cretly dogging and watching to qual
ify him for a disinterested wnness,
and the testimony oi none o
these 'private detectives should ever
be taken in court, or accepted
anywhere, else, unless it can be veri-
