CHONG PUT. Honolulu, Dec. 22, 1890. 119-lw CORRESPONDENCE. Ws do not bold ourselyes rssponslbls for lbs statements msde, or opinions expressed by our correspondents. Bim and Currency. Ma. Editor: Tho two most im portant questions of the age to bo settled in all civilised countries are the rum traffic and the currency. Tho first affects the morals of men, and tho latter their physical well being. Neither will ever be settled until they are settled right. The rum question can . only bo set tled right by prohibition. No evil was ever settled right in this world in any other way. The currency question can only bo settled right by national banks under Govern ment ownership and control. The rum question if settled right would stor all the evils It now creates, which, statistics inform us, is over one-half of all idiocy, in sanityjpauperism, theft and murder. In fact rum creates, either directly or indirectlv. over one-half of all crime, suffering and misery known to civilized man. - . CURRENCY. A currency ma'de and distributed by a wise system, under Govern ment supervision, ownership and control, would cure many of the evils afflicting business and pro duction caused by an insufficient supply of currency, or an imperfect ,: distribution, or a usurious rate of interest, or by all combined, which causes business stagnation, ( hard times and "money panics " such, however, are the harvest times of the usurer -hard earned fortunes are swept away, the accumulation, perhaps, of many years of toil, en terprise is checked, laborers are idle and many suffer for the neces saries of life.; I submit that every intelligent man knows, or may know by investigation, that every statement made above is true. How then can we justify ourselves in opposing either prohibition or Gov ernment supply and distribution .of currency, seeing that moro than one-half of all suffering and crime would be banished from the civil ized world by these two improve ments.
