"Washington-, February 17th.
With martial honors and with all
the ceremony due his high rank,
the body of the late David D. Por
ter, Admiral of the Navv, was laid
to rest in Arlington. Not since the
burial of Sheridan has Washing
ton witnessed as imposing a fun
eral, every branch of the military
and naval service being represent
ed. The Grand Army of the Re
public and the Sons of the Amer
ican Revolution occupied a promi
nent place in the long procession.
All the Executive Departments were
closed, and everywhere throughout
the city flags were displayed at half
mast. The body of the Admiral
lay in state at the family residence
all the forenoon, and was viewed by
a constant stream of people. The
remains were dressed in full uni
form, encased in a casket covered
with purple velvet, lined with white
satin, aDd having heavy silver han
dles, and plate appropriately in
scribed.
The services were held at the
house and were conducted by Rev.
Dr. Douglass, rector of St. John's
After the service the casket was
deposited in the hearse and the pro
cession moved toward Arlington
Cemetery.
The procession was headed by
Rear-Admiral Kimberley.now senior
officer of the navy, with his staff.
After them came officers represent
ing the different corps of the G. A.
R. and a number of troops. After
these came the hearse with sailors on
either side. Following the hearse
came the mourners in carriages,
President and Cabinet, Chief Justice
and Associates of the Supreme Court,
Senate and House, Diplomatic
Corps, officers of the navy, army and
marine corps, delegates from G. A.
R. posts and civic societies.
The number of troops in line was
nearly 3,000. At the bridge crossing
the Potomac all the troops but the
marines and cavalry drew out and
the remainder of the procession pro
ceeded to the cemetery.
As the casket was lowered the
clergy read the Episcopal burial
service and the G. A. K. Post of
which Admiral Porter had been a
member performed the usjial service
