Mr. II. Z. Osborne, before tbc
Last Editorial Convection of South
ern California, delivered the follow
ing in the course of his address:
"The newspaper should reeeivo
the hearty support of every busi
ness man within the radius of its
circulation.
"Next to the Almighty who
made the sun, the valleys and the
mountains,Southern California was
more indebted to the newspapers
for its growth and prosperity than
to any other agency. There aro
men in this city who have grown
rich from the growth of the coun
try, duo largely to tho intelligent
efforts of the newspapers, who
make it their boast that they never
advertise in newspapers. I con
sider a merchant or business man
who makes it a matter of principle
to avoid patronizing tho newspapers
whose efforts have contributed to
his wealth, morally a dishonest
man. He is one of those who reaps
where he has not sown, and profits
upon that which others contribute
to maintain. fPaciiic Printer."
Nev Coins.
Washington. April C. Director
of tho Mint Leech will issue a cir
cular to-morrow to artists for new
designs for subsidiary coins. The
general features of tho present
coins will bo preserved to a con
siderable extent. The coins to bo
changed are the silver dollar, half
dollar, quarter-dollar and dime.
These changes are to be made
under the act passed at the
last session of Congress, which
appropriated 150,000 for the
purpose, and is availablo July 1st.
Director Leech thinks that from
82,000,000 to 83,000,000 of the un
availablo assets of tbo 820,000,000
now in tho Treasury can be re
coined -with this appropriation.
Tho gold coins are considered sat
isfactory, und, it is thought, will
not be changed. Tho designs aftor
being selected, will not be changed
for twenty-five years.
From A to Izzard.
The aieasurcs for long distances
havo varied widely at different
times and with different nations, to
say nothing of the comparisocs
used in different sections of our
own country. For instance:
The Jews said " from Dan to
Beersheba."
Tho Persians say " from Medina
to Mecca."
Tho English say "from Land's
End to John O'Groat's."
Tha Yankeo says " from Maino
to Texas."
The Sontherncr says " from Flo
rida to Alaska."
Tho Sucker and Hoosier say
"from tho Great Lakes to the
Gulf."
The South American say3 if from
the Isthmus to tho Horn."
In Louisiana they say "from
.New Orleans to Pittsburg."
In California the common ex
pression is "from Altaville to Pilot
iLnob." St. Louis .Republic.
