DAILY PACIFIC COMMERCIAL ADVERTISER, MARCH 18, 1892. SLATE BALL. Har Majesty the Queen Entertains At lolani Palace. BRILLIANT SOCIAL GATHERING, Superb Decorations and Fine Mntlc Grand Illumination In the Grounds The Guest, ete., etc. Yesterday evening Her Queen Liliuokalani gave Majesty a State Ball at lolani Palace, the first since Her accession to the Throne. It was an exceedingly brilliant event, the attendance being unusually large, showing that the invitations were very generally accepted ; and not only that, it was a representa tive assemblage one in which the wealth and beauty of the city was congregated. Many strangers were also present, and must have en joyed the occasion. Half-past eight o'clock was the hour mentioned in the handsome invitation for the ball, but long before that time the invited guests began to arrive. The carriages containing guests entered the Palace grounds bv the Richard street gate, and drew up at the steps facing that street. Over the steps was a tent-like covering. Here the guests were conducted down the flight of steps by mem bers of Her Majesty's staff and conducted to the dressing rooms, gentlemen going to the right in the Chamberlain's office, the ladies to the left on the other side of the hallway, where a large room was specially fitted up for their accom modation. Draperies hung in every direction in this room, and it was evident that deft fingers com bined with artistic taste had been at work. The hallway leading from the dressing rooms to the staircase, by which the guests reached the main floor of the Palace, was draped on either side with red, white and blue, and gar lands of evergreens, offering to all a glowing welcome. Arriving on the main floor the in vited guests entered the throne room where Her Majesty held an informal reception, standing just in front of the dais. It was a charm ing sight in the throne room, for it was most beautifully decorated, the electric light chandeliers pro ducing an effect that was highly picturesque. On the dais stood a number of magnificent kahilis, and also a tabu stick. The mirrors were banked with choice flowers at the foot, while pretty vines hung from the top. The grand hallway was an object of admira tion from all. On either side were banked all kinds of potted plants. In the alcoves stood handsome bou quets, their perfume being most fragrant. At the head of the stair way was the first letter of the word aloha, made of evergreen wreaths, and on the steps on either side stood potted plants. Dancing was carried on in the throne room and also the dining room, which was taste fully decorated. The Royal Hawaiian Orchestra was sta tioned at the mauka end of tho hall and played for dancing. On a raised platform to the left of the back veranda was the band of the U. S. Flagship San Francisco, which played between the dances. The order of dances was as follows : 1, Lancers; 2, Waltz; 3, Polka; 4, Lancers ; 5, Waltz ; 6, Schot tische ; 7, Lancer3 ; 8, Waltz ; 9, Polka; 10, Lancers; 11, Waltz; 12. Schottische ; 13, Mazurka; 14, Galop. When dancing was going on, the scene was very brilliant, many of the ladies wearing very elegant costumes. The grounds were illuminated with hundreds of colored lanterns, so arranged as to produce a fine effect on approaching the Palace. An elegant supper was served in the lanai in front of the Palace shortly after 11 o'clock. The in terior of this building was elabor ately decorated with flags and streamers, and lit up by the elec tric light. There was a most abun dant supply of choice edibles plenty for everybody. It need hardly be said that ample justice was done to the many good things. The arrangements of the ball were in the able hands of Major Jas. W. Robertson, Her Majesty's Chamberlain, who certainly must be congratulated on the great suc cess which attended the whole affair. There was not a drawback of any kind, and those present voted it the finest ball ever given in Honolulu. Many of the strangers present were surprised at the bril liancy of this ball, and were loud in their praise of the handsome manner in which they had been entertained. GENERAL AGENT' 3005-1 i Few Hints to Before buying a bicycle and paying your good hard Hawaiian dollars for it, stop and consider a few points . Consider how many different makes of bicycles, both American and foreign, there are on the market. Consider how little the majority of purchasers know of the quality of metal used in the bicycle they are examining, and how much they must rely on the reputation on the manufacturer or dealer. Consider how essential it is that a bicycle should be made of the best steel forgings, tubes and wire, and that the greatest of care should he use in putting the parts together to insure long life and ease in running. Consider all these" points, and then ask yourself if you are really a judge of a wheel, or if you are safe in taking the advice of a friend who, possibly, may not know any more about a wheel than you do. After you have considered, and if you are able to decide to your satisfaction, then buy the bicycle that suits you. If you have any doubts, then be on the safe side and buy the bicycle that is mentioned by the greatest number of persons as the leading wheel. The COLUMBIA is admitted by all to be of the highest grade and the leading bicycle. I have handled the Columbia from the first and my experience is that it is the most satisfactory wheel for an agent to sell or a wheelman to ride. The advantages in buying a Columbia are : First You get the wheel that is recognized as tho leading bicycle, being made of the best metal and shows best workmanship. Second You get the prettiest 1892 wheel. Third You get a wheel of American manufacture, and can easily replace parts. You can obtain obtain parts of any wheel made by this company years hence. Fifth You can always sell a second-hand Columbia quicker and tret a better 1 price than for any other wheel. Sixth You will, at any time be given information regarding the care or re pairing of the wheel purchased, by the local agent.
