UAILY PACIFIC COMMERCIAL, ADVERTISER, JULY 13i PEAKL HAilBOK. Wilcox Thinks It Will Be a Good Scbrnn to Cede PuuJoa. V Nawahi Waxes Eloquent but His Argument Fails to Impress Mr. Achi Nawahi Wants to he on the Com mittee. The mass meeting at the Old Armory yesterday evening on the "Cession of Pearl Harbor to Amer ica," called by Hon. R. W.Wilcox, was attended by about three hun dred native ITawaiians, besides a few foreigners. The meeting was enthusiastic at times, especially when Hon. Jos. Kawahi attempted to nullify the effects of the argu ments of Mr. Wilcox. The re marks of Mr. Wilcox on the Ces sion of Pearl Harbor was received in a cold manner by the audience, excepting bursts of applause at some of his remarks mentioned below. The speakers were inter rogated by the audience. Hon. J. G. Hoapili was chosen chairman. Hon. It. W. Wilcox Friends : I shall Bpe&k to night on ihe cession of Pearl Harbor to tho United States, but I shall first explain my situation regarding my resolution. 1 know that the subject is not popular among yon. Bat do not entertain th idea for a moment that I am s eeasionist after nearly sacrificing my life for the interest ol this country. The purpose el the ri -solution, ii carried, is to tind : out what America intends to give ns . in return if we were to cede Puuloa. ! The committee is not authorized at all to cede one inch of Puuloa to America. Applause Perhaps some of you have read about Gibraltar. It has been in possession of England since 1704, but not an inch more of Spain had been ceded to England. This is a similar case with that of Puuloa. I say if Puuloa is given to America that would give us inde pendence forever. We are not reap ing anything at all from Puuloa. During fae reijjn of King Luna lilo, General Scofield came here and Tjnnalilo'o "Cabinet dis cussed the matter with him. The late Premier Gibson had told you that one inch of Hawaii shall not be taken away. He said that in or der to bo popular with the people. He also said that if people would go to Lauai, they would go to Heaven. The committee's duties would be only to find out everything about the matter. They have no right at all to cede one inch ot Puuloa. Ha waii is to America what Malta is to England. Hawaii is a little island in mid Pacific; a very much covetted placeHtrjr America as a coaling sta tion. If America gains possession of Pearl Harbor, she will spend mil lions of dollars there. It will draw ua nearer to America. It will hasten the laying of the proposed tele graphic cable. If we give away Puu loa to America, we will fear no longer about annexation, for America would then be satisfied. America does not want another inch of our land. But if you wisli ! to remain poor and needy, that is your business. If the nation does not want to cede Puuloa, the question will be dropped immediately; but we shall gain one point, for we shall know for certainty theiews of America concerning this subject. I would be sorry to see an nexation carried out. How can we increase our numbers? Will it be by mere idle talk? A patriot will always fight for his country. Cowards run to the mountains. Tho audience: We are such men. I do not mind going to prison frequently for your rights. Those who oppose me now will be the first to congratulate me hereafter. Pearl Harbor is not giv ing ns any returns at all. America can take us at any time. Which of yon will fight against such an at tempt? I shall bo the only one to do it, and those who gnash their teeth at me will run away. I would like to be one of the cemmitteo to Washington. We are getting poorer and poorer, and the time may come when lab orers v?ould not earn ten cents per day. A coinage bill requiring the coining of one cent pieces was passed at the Legislature to day. That was done in view of the coming financial depression. If wo give Puuloa to America, .kuglana may want a coal ing station here also. Well, give her Koolan; that is the only way of maintaining our iudepender.ee. I am always in favor of bnhng tho way of restoring our prosperity. The foreign papers has it that Ha waiians own only one-tenth of the soil of Hawaii, and foreigners, nine tenths. But that fact does not dim inish our patriotism in the least. Do not think that I havo become an annexationist because of my recent imprisonment. The oftener they cast me into prison, the more they incur the hatred of the cation. I Applause . Mr. Kuula asked: Will the ces sion of Funic a to America give us prosperity? Will it promote rail ways? Mr. Wilcox: I have answered that before. I am sure our land would enjoy prosperity. George Markham told how the Constitution was obtained. The Constitution does not prevent the Queen, Cabinet or Legislature from ceding Fearl Harbor. He did not agree, howevor, with that portion of the resolution requiring America to give an "adequate compensation" on the cession of Pearl Harbor. R. W. Wilcox then read the resolu tion in Hawaiian, to correct tho mis apprehension of Mr. Markhaai. Hon. J. Nawahi : Dear friends The previous speaker is a Hawaiian like myself, but I do not agree with him. I Applause. Somebody had promised you before to speak on this subject, but he had not done so. We have been accused of being ignorant. Perhaps I may admit thaL The fa tare will reveal to yon whether Wil cox or myself is correct. Long ago I had said that the cession of Pearl Harbor was the initial step to annex ation, a?:d the truth of that saying is now becoming evident. Tho pre vious speaker is of the san;i political faith as myself, but to night we are at variance. Sweet and bitter waters will not come out of the same spring. Applause. Shun those who favor the cession of Pearl Harbor at the coming election campaign. They are not true to their principles. We ask who petitioned this resolution to the Legislature. Did it emanate from yon? (Cries of ' No!' I do not say that the member from Waialua i ha3 no right to introduce this resoln ; tion. But I know that you do not favor it. Shall the G ;vi rnmentsend anyone to America who is opposed to this question ? Thev will r.ot send me. ! I Mr. Wilcox said that he would glad- iy give his place on the committee to Mr. Nawabi. America looks opon ' P ari Harbor with covetous eyes. ' Mara warfare is always progressing. $700,000 was passed by Col j;res sometime ago for improving rear! Harbor. Wi:y dot's not America dredge Pearl Harbor? Tue truth is this: It has been ascertained by sur veyors that it would be a waste of money to dredge that harbor. W. C. Achi asked Nawahi whether the committee of the Legislature will have authority to cede Peari Harbor? J. Nawahi replied that they have no authority. W. C. Achi said that he pitied the people being led astrny by Nawahi. He know the folly of Nawahi's argu moots. J. Nawahi continuing said that the planters favor this resolution be canse ir would be the means of re plenishing their coffers. The plant ers do not favor annexation because America dops not pnrmit the c;n tract system. Sue does not believe in shivedom. J. K. Hookano asked Nawahi what would be the bst way of defeating the resolution f If I bad 3 our place I would explain to the people the course the representatives would take in the Legislature to kill the resolution. Hon. G. P. Kamauoha Dear Friends : I shall be in the same whirlpool with the previous speak ers ; w e are all Hawaiians, and we all love our country and our race. We ask, shall the resolution be the mean3 of bringing prosperity upon our country ? What is the use of sending a committee to America ! 'I he real intent of the resolution, if carried, would be to give full au thority to tho committee. If immi gration is a question of greater vital importance, then we shall know the loyalty und fidelity of your repro sentatives by the way they vote on that question in the Legislature.
